Posted November 7, 200816 yr I have noticed that couple of my pairs won't touch their soft food while othewrs go bonkers for it. I was considering particularly for show chicks clutches topping up thm up one feed a day with a high protien handrearing mix. Any thoughts on the pros and cons of this? November 7, 200816 yr Not necessary, I dont think. If you use budgie starter and a full range of vegies and seed they should be fine. I also use whole powdered egg for breeding pairs and babies in the kindie cage. Served dry.
November 7, 200816 yr Author I wouldn't do it for pairs that will take the other food, but a couple of them are refusing to touch anything other than the straigt seed, they won't touch soft food or even vegies, I'm worried that the babies are missing out on important food sources in this case? November 7, 200816 yr Are you mixing what they will eat through what they are unsure of ? The important thing with show budgie types is to get protein into them, and thats why I use the whole egg powder. Others are using whey protein and some are even using hemp protein powder. Apparently the hemp protein powder makes them "hungry"
November 7, 200816 yr Author What protein percentage is best? The rearing formula I use is 22% protein which seemed pretty good which is why I chose it. Â I am still supplying the supplementary foods to them incase they decide to try it but they just won't eat it, my other pairs go nuts for it Edited November 8, 200816 yr by KAZ
November 7, 200816 yr Do yourself a favour and try the whole egg powder...certainly makes a difference. I also put it in every crop feed these days. Â egg powder supplier
November 7, 200816 yr 5kg bag How long does it last and how much do you pay for it? I bought the larger bag 15 kgs and shared with two others. It was around $178 for 15 kilos. Best to go shares with someone, or try the whey protein available in health food shops ( for people ).
November 7, 200816 yr Author I have protein powder from the health food shop, can anyone tell me if it's suitable: Â Ingredients: Soy protein (86.5%) Fructuse Maltodextrin Flavour Sweetener(sucrolose) Edited November 8, 200816 yr by KAZ

BUT egg powder IS a fantastic source of protein and I recommend it to everyone.
November 7, 200816 yr The egg powder looks great It says to store between 8-15 degrees - how is that possible? its too warm for a fridge, but too cool for a pantry??

November 7, 200816 yr Author So how much protein powder should I be mixing into my handrearing mix? Is it something I can mix into the adults soft food too to try and encourage them to eat it (since it's slightly sweet). What sort of percentage protein should I be aiming for? November 7, 200816 yr Do yourself a favour and try the whole egg powder...certainly makes a difference. I also put it in every crop feed these days.  egg powder supplier  It says available from Coles or Woolworths - I have my doubts my local supermarket will stock a 5kg bag of egg powder, but I will certainly look next time. Is this where you get yours from Kaz?
November 7, 200816 yr Author No Sunnie it says eggs are available at Colles and Woolworths, for egg products call the number listed
November 7, 200816 yr I need some too but would have to fine a few to go shares as it would take for ever to use, I wouldn't worry about it now as I have almost finished my breeding for the year.
November 7, 200816 yr Author I was thinking the same thing Splat, not much breeding to go for me either so I'll just use the protein powder now but next season I'd gladly go shares

Is this where you get yours from Kaz? We have to have it brought into W.A. on a special order through the egg company. On my clubs products table now you can buy a kilo pack...let me know if anyone want some and at the next meeting I can get some and send over. About $15-17 for a kilo pack I think it was. I will check. Edited November 7, 200816 yr by KAZ
November 7, 200816 yr Author So how much protien powder should I be mixing into my handrearing mix? What sort of percentage protien should I be aiming for? Â Â Anyone? Â Â The handy thing is that the company is located in Melbourne so we might even be able to pick it up directly

November 8, 200816 yr Author It comes in 5kg bags also  I also found some info that said that Farm Pride and also Pace Farms sell or atleast used to sell it in 3-400g tubs as well, might give them a call on Monday Edited November 8, 200816 yr by melbournebudgies
November 8, 200816 yr Yes but MB you have to buy 15 kgs of it, hey Kaz when is your next meeting? 22nd Nov. Â Â *** Re the egg powder. It has brought birds back from the brink of death when added to emergency crop feeds. It definitely makes a difference. Also served dry in finger drawers next to the nestbox entrance. Parents feeding chicks go through a teaspoon full every 2nd day. Where used in nests of failing chicks the chicks come back stronger and cured from bad feeding parents.
