Fresh Veges During Treatment

Featured Replies

hi all , ive just got to ask is it okay to give my birds fresh veges whilst treating them with antibiotics ? :D i ask only because my budgies have gone off the fresh sprouts and grated carrots since i started their baycox treatment for cocci . ive also been catching them to dose them with meds a bit lately and changed a few birds to different cages so im hoping they are just sulking a bit , and taking a bit of time to settle back down again . they used to hoe in but now its going barely touched at all

This depends. Are you giving the meds by injection, orally via syringe, or in the water? If you are giving meds in the water then remove fresh veggies and sprouts from the diet until the meds are over. Many birds will get their daily requirement of water through foods and if you are feeding fresh veggies they have a high water content. Your bird would not need to drink, therefore would not be getting any of the medicine. :D If you are giving meds orally or via injection, check with your vet first, but I don't think feeding fresh foods then would be an issue.

i was giving them the medications in the water and theyve gone off the soft foods since i started the treatment . i hadnt thought of the fact they would possibly get enough water from the fresh veges and therefore not drink the dosed water :D

I stay away from the greens when I'm treating my birds (treatment usually lasts 3-5 days) although they still get soft food daily. I don't really care whether they go off it or not, it's available fresh so they can eat it if they want.

The advice I received this year for the treatment of doxy ahead of the breeding season was: 6 days treatment, 1 day rest with soft food and veggies. However, this is for an extended period- up to 2 months ...

It's vital that the birds drink their meds when your doing relatively short-term treatments. When I do the 2 day treatment for parasites I withhold water the previous day. It works a treat! :)

Did your vet give you any instructions? Most people I know take there birds of the vegies until the antibiotics are finished... Alot of the medications have instructions on them...

JB , sorry the only instuctions the vet gave me was how much to mix with the water and how long to treat for . 3 mls/litre made fresh daily for 3 days .

in future i think i will just not give them fresh veges during treatments to be on the safe side . thanks for the good advice as usual

YES I TOTALLY AGREE WITH EVERYONE.

With some medications you are meant to take out the calcium blocks, grit and cuttlefish while medicating.
