How long do I wait to interviene?   ... good timeing guys! Its all just happened. Congratulations :anim_19: Give the hen time to feed and dont keep looking in. If the chick isnt fed by dark then administer a drop of food to its beak and put it back in the nest
November 27, 200816 yr Author A few questions: Â Should I re-check when it IS dark? or before? I have paswells handrearing mix on standby. How should I mix it? As the box says? Or do you guys have better ideas? I can touch them cant I? Cause I already did to see if its crop was full. Should I take bub out to feed it, or leave it in the box? Im worried if i leave it in the box mum will fly out unless I block her off from it. Â I really really dont wanna loose these bubs so I am more than willing to hand rear if need be. Or do you guys have better ideas? The baby will only take a DROP ...not worth worrying about ratio and mix...just a smidge warm and runny. I can touch them cant I? Cause I already did to see if its crop was full. Yes Should I take bub out to feed it, or leave it in the box? Im worried if i leave it in the box mum will fly out unless I block her off from it. Try and do it at the box or nearby and put straight back in ......only feed if you have to and a new baby with food in its crop shows very slightly..a pale creamish bubble I really really dont wanna loose these bubs so I am more than willing to hand rear if need be. You most likely wont have to...give the Mum a chance. Too much disturbance by you around the nestbox may stop her doing her job  PICTURES >>>>>>>>>>  Edited November 27, 200816 yr by **Liv**

November 27, 200816 yr Okay. Its getting dark so I just checked on it. And i cant see any food in the crop at all....Should I feed it now? Â I would... I'd also follow Kaz's advice re this as she's probably done it a million times. Good luck
November 27, 200816 yr It will be okay! Sometimes they just need a little something to pick them up and get them to 'squark' for some tucker from mum. Edited November 27, 200816 yr by maesie
November 27, 200816 yr Author Okays, I have just fed bubba. Sooo cute. I love its little squwarks. Â When should I next check it? In case I need to feed again? If mum is feeding it, should the bub constantly have a full crop?
November 27, 200816 yr Okays, I have just fed bubba. Sooo cute. I love its little squwarks. When should I next check it? In case I need to feed again? If mum is feeding it, should the bub constantly have a full crop?  Great stuff 'granny'  I 'believe' first thing in the morning (not 100% sure)... you don't want to bother her in the night as she may get a fright.  As to the crop... It wouldn't always be full. The chick gets fed often and just after feeding it can often be bulging!!! It will empty/begin to and then mum will feed again.
November 27, 200816 yr Author Awesome, thanks for your help. Hopefully KAZ or someone can confirm it. YAY! Â Ps. Im mum. lol. My mum is grandma. I told mum about it today by saying "Hi Grandma!" and she flipped! she is as excited as I am. Â Whoops too late! Thanks KAZ....But, how will I know in the morning if she is feeding him- if their crops arnt always full? Edited November 27, 200816 yr by jwancia

I've never had to handrear or even help any chicks so I don't like to give advice without back up form other experieced members. Good luck and I hope s/he is well fed in the morning  You'll know if it's been fed! It may not be bursting but you'll be able to see some yellow in there!
