Posted November 5, 200816 yr Okay, so i have noticed in my breeding cage that there are some very large runny poops. I also noticed that my hen has a very swollen belly. Her vent looks clean and not swollen, it just looks like she has an egg behind it. They have both been in the nest box lately. Is this normal of a hen that is just going lay or do you think she is egg bound. Im feeding her calcium supplements and lots of sprouts and vegies as well as fresh seed and water. November 5, 200816 yr Most hens have an egg bum with in 24 -48 hours of laying an egg... Give a drop of calcivet on beak if egg bound should pass in the next 30 mins
November 5, 200816 yr If you suspect it is egg bound take it to a vet as it will die with in 48 hours!
November 5, 200816 yr Author Well I dont know what the difference is between being egg bound and just laying an egg? They seem to have the same syptoms? She isnt panting or fluffed up...? How do I tell?
November 5, 200816 yr If she looks healthy and isn't fluffed up then it is probably just a normal egg If she starts to show any signs of stress or discomfort vet straight away

November 5, 200816 yr If it seems to be taking too long and you are worried a drop of Calcivet to the beak and many recommend a drop of olive oil on the vent.
November 5, 200816 yr Author Okays. All is looking good then OMGOSH! Cross fingers, MY FIRST EGGIE! OH it will be such a loved egg. I am also so thankfull that I have an avian vet around the corner. DR.COLIN WALKER, lives around the corner from me. How blessed!
November 5, 200816 yr Author I love him, he is so sweet and gentle. He used to see my dogs before he got his own avian practice. And he has done so much in the field of research ect. My greatest respect that man.

So I dont think its due to poor nutition.... HELP? As this seems to be your first experience by all means take her to the vet sooner rather than later. Here's a few tips for when you are more adept at spotting the signs: Pull the vent feathers so you can get a good look Gently feel for the solid mass of the egg IF she is egg bound she will need heat and lubricant to pass the egg Some breeders place the hen in a warm hospital cage and apply olive oil to the vent I run a warm tap and allow the water to wash over her (hen head up, water cascading down). The warm water massages the affected area and helps the hen to pass the egg. After about 15mins of this I gently towel her and place into the hospital cage. I repeat this process every couple of hours until she passes the egg. Good Luck! Edited November 5, 200816 yr by renee
