Posted November 4, 200816 yr I have noticed that my young hen cannot fly, she flutters her wings but cannot lift herself off the ground. I have only just noticed because i went to move her out of quarantine and into the aviary. It looks like she is missing some flight feathers from both wings, i have no idea when or how it happen. she has never shown any signs of hurting herslef and i never saw feathers in her cage. She was not like it when i got her so it has somehow happened while she has been in quarantine. I am wondering if the amount she is missing is enough to stop her from flying or could there be another reason? she is healthy and been wormed.
November 4, 200816 yr Looks like she is regrowing the flights doesn't it Deb ? If so, time will tell. But some budgies do remain flightless. I guess in this case you will have to wait and see once the new flights grow in.
November 4, 200816 yr Author She is regrowing them which is good. What can cause budgies to remain flightless. When Dave was visiting me he mentioned that if some budgies are small their wings are not strong enough to lift them off ground.
November 4, 200816 yr Even big budgies can have flight issues...ones with all the flights too. Sometimes an inherited issue with muscle tone perhaps ? I have three flightless birds who all have their flight feathers.
November 5, 200816 yr I have 2 flightless budgies - both of mine are from wing breaks I hope she grows back her flights and is all better for you soon
November 5, 200816 yr It does look like they are growing back... Hopefully they do and she can fly until her hearts content! Good luck and please keep us updated
