October 17, 200816 yr You have just brought your baby home and it is quite possible it has barely been handled. It has come from its birth home, to be stuck in a pet shop (I am assuming) then brought to another strange environment. It will take quite a while for your baby to become used to its new home and you. Always move very slowly when your hand is in the cage, even resting your hand for a few seconds as you ease it over to whatever object you are moving/changing eg seed, water. Talk softly to Jellybean everytime you are near her cage and just take things very quietly and slowly. Time is a vital factor.
October 17, 200816 yr Here is an article that was written up for the site called Taming Your Budgie, please read it will give you information you need to start working with your new budgie http://forums.budgiebreeders.asn.au/faqs/i...&artlang=en. Can you change the water and seed without putting your hands in the cage? I think one thing people don't realize is that birds that have not been handled at a tender age are "wild" they are not domesticated like dogs they do need consistent attention and working with. Most breeders (not all) and all pet shops do not handle their budgies like they do their bigger parrots they let them fly around without human interaction until they are adopted. Your bird is very frightened and seeds your hands as a predator. Think about how tiny he is and how big your hand is. How did they catch him for you? With their hands and then they used their hands to put him in a box for you to take home all a very stressful and frightening experience so all he remembers is the hand is bad. You with patience will have to undo those thought and you can with time and patience, remember your bird is not a dog or cat and doesn't like to be petted so you will have to work with your voice and presence vs your hands. Also you may consider getting his wings clips it helps with taming but clipping wings does not earn trust so do know that if you clip and he sits on your hand because he has no where to go doesn't mean he is trusting you. Anyways...keep us updated let us know how it goes but remember be patient. Edited October 18, 200816 yr by Neat spelling
October 17, 200816 yr Is it a boy or a girl budgie because you say he and she .......did they tell you what it was ?
October 18, 200816 yr Author Hi everyone Jellybean seems to have calm down a lot if I put my hand where he can see the and move slowly he will not get scared.but we are still working on putting my hands out of site. Considering yesterday he wouldn't let me near him it's a great achivment :ohmygod: he still think I'm the predetor though. My friend has a pet shop budgie and was wondering how long did it take to tame your PET SHOP budgie?
October 19, 200816 yr Every budgie is different... regardless of where you got it from. You just have to take it slowly and keep at it. Great news about your little guy. I sometimes use millet when I'm training them. They start to see you and your hand as a good thing as they get food. Good luck and please keep us updated.

November 13, 200816 yr Author hi today I found out that we MIGHT be moving soon to Melbourne in a little more than a month because dad's company is shutting down. It's all really exciting if you ask me but the thing is we can't take Jellybean with us so we will have to give him away I've only just got him to trust me. All that work every day gone. I'm upset alright heaps upset. The good things are that I heard there a lot's of breeder in Melbourne and that mum's brother lives there. But still.... I've been living in Adelaide for 3 years it's going to be hard to just let go and move. Plus I'm not a kind of kid who makes friend easily, I was all alone in the school for a whole 2 terms and often get teased as the teacher's pet. I to my parents and they were like: :tut_tut: . As I said we might so let's hope that things turn out the right way I hope your having nicer days than i am
