Avariy size

I'm in the middle of building an aviary and i have got dimensions of 2m by 3 on the front and 3m by 1.5 at the back. Is this a good size? How many budgies can you add? we live in an area where summer temps can reach 45c for prolonged periods and in winter it is close to frost point. will they breed if I just hang nesting boxes on the walls? how many of cocks and hens should i start with?

The aviary size sounds really great!!! As to breeding, you may or may not have success with just hanging the boxes in the aviary. If you do this you will have no clear idea of who the daddy bird is. Also hens can get really aggressive over nest boxes. Mine did some serious damage to each other when i tried colony breeding so i have to separate each pair into breeding cages if i want to breed. If you are going to colony breed i've read that you should have 2 boxes for each hen and twice as many cocks as hens. Not sure if this is totally correct.

How many birds you can have in your aviary depends on perch space. Each bird needs like 10 inches of perch space. They spend most of the day sitting around remember.

As to temperature i don't think it should bother them. Hopefully your aviary is in the shade. I live in Canberra, Australia and it can get both very hot and very cold during the year. My budgies don't seems to get affected by either extremes.

How mcuh do breeding cabinets cost around?

$40. I haven't got any yet but want some for my birthday. :)

I picked up a bargain at a garage sale years ago for $10.00. An old wardrobe, turned into 8 breed cages. It was a 2 - door wardrobe. Doors taken off, piece of wood down the centre, and 3 'shelves', making 4 shelves with the base, and each shelf is 2 boxes. Nests were screwed to the back - they actually used old sieves (it was designed for finches), wire on the front, with egg cups used for seed and water. I am just setting it up again for next season, as it needed some repairs.

IF you are looking for breeding cages have a look in your trading post (courier mail) for some second hand ones, sometimes they are nice and cheap since the owner is quiting breeding and wanting to get rid of all the stuff.

okay cool! Thanks guys. By the way, what's courier mail?
