Old Fashioned Sewing Box...

Featured Replies

I'm in the process of preparing my Christmas Wish list (It's so hard!!!), and as I'm now living on my own... I need a sewing basket. Now no offense to any one... but I don't want one of the old granny looking ones, with material and lace :tut_tut: .

My Granny has one of those wooden ones that fold out, and has four small compartments plus the large one on the bottom. I bought one for my sister a few years ago, but now I can find them. I have found one online: Wooden Sewing Box. The small one is EXACTLY what I'm looking for. My sister's was similar but had material panels in the top. Either or would be fine. Does anyone know where I can fine them??? I did do a search on Google but didn't have much luck. Thanks in advance all :P

Oh wow! how cool are they!! good luck with your search :)

I bet you can buy everything you need at the craft store and make it yourself the way you like it maesie of course I am not the handy but you maybe

Funny thing is Elly... I actually thought about doing it myself not long ago... maybe I should not be so lazy and look for instructions on how to make one instead! Cheers!

I think so maesie  then you would have exactly what you want.

I didn't receive a sewing basket for christmas, and never got around to buying on. My parents were up visiting my Granny a few weeks ago, and mentioned to her how much I loved her sewing basket, and that I'd been looking for one. My Granny is not well at the moment and has cancer. She's not expected to make it to next christmas. She's started marking things she wants given to certain family members. So, hearing that I love her sewing basket (which to her is just that... nothing special) she decides that I will receive it. Instead of waiting till she passes, she went through it and gave it to my parents to give to me for my 30th Birthday. I was not aware of this...and I must admit, I did shed some tears... It doesn't look like anything special, but the memories mean so much more. She left many things in it, and I'll just add to it. Apart from the box itself, I love the buttons. As a child I remember playing with them as she mended my socks... I've already managed to use some of them. I bought a skirt the other day which had ugly gold buttons. I took them off and replaced them with all odd black buttons from her... It's now a special skirt...

So, here it is:

That is the most beautiful sewing box! You can treasure it and pass it on yourself one day.

I think there is something about grandmothers and sewing boxes. My grandmother bought one for me and lined it herself. I still have it. It was just a tiny one suitable for a little girl.

I now find that I need a lot of space for the reels of thread for my sewing machine and overlocker. My solution has been to buy a lovely big plastic tool box from a well known hardware store. It has a large compartment at the bottom and nice lift-out tray in which I can organise smaller items.

Thanks! It is just great. It's quite big when it's extended and holds memories and sewing equiptment... :raincloud: And I agree about the grandmother thing. I still remember her teaching me how to darn holes in socks and how to knit (which still to this day I can't do... too much of a perfectionist!!!) Your current sewing box sounds like my jewelery box... great for all my necklaces, bracelets and earings (esp after shopping in Bali)

The little boxes for fishing things are great for sorting out knick knacks and buttons, too. I think they are for fishing tackle. I'm not quite sure what is included under tackle.

Yes, my grandmother passed on her skills to me, too. She taught me to knit (successfully), whereas my mother had failed. She taught me tapestry and tried to teach me to tat as well. Chinese checkers was a favourite of hers and I remember happy times playing that with her.

She had one of those mushroom things for darning socks. Thank goodness there is no need to do that now. Did you actually learn to darn socks?

Oh... the memories. I remember watching her darn socks, and she also had one of those mushroom things. I don't think I ever learn as such, but I do remember putting our holey socks aside for when we went to see Granny again. My Granny was an amazing cook in her day too, as most Grandma's are. All her children and all the Grandchildren now have a cook book which was compiled with all the recepies she had 'in her head' and those she'd written down.
