Posted November 1, 200816 yr Hi This morning when I woke up I did my morning check on the birds and found chomper dead at the bottom of the breeding cage. He did not have a messy bottom. I am going to see if I can get into a vet to see if they can find how and why he died. He was not sick yesterday, he was energetic as he usually is. He has left behind summer with 4 babies (about 3 - 4 weeks old). Can summer look after these babies herself? Beleive me, if chomper was sick yesterday I would have taken him to the vet straight away. THanks.
November 1, 200816 yr Sorry to hear this Pearce. Some Dads do die during the raising of babies. If they had an undetected heart condtion the breeding puts an extra load on them that reveals itself in this way. Summer can raise the babies but you will have to take extra good care of her, the best and easiest of food readily available to her. Millet in her nestbox. Soft food in the breeder cage every day. She wont want to be out for long to eat. Best of luck...and again...sorry to hear about Chomper :glare:
November 1, 200816 yr Sorry for your loss mate. Put Chomper in a few plastic bags in the fridge until you can get him to the vets. Hopefully it's nothing serious. I agree with Kaz... she'll be fine. If you make sure you put her food just outside the nest box (maybe next to the opening) she won't have far to pop out, have a feed and go back in. Good luck and please keep us updated.
November 1, 200816 yr Also if you use Kaz's idea of using seed as bedding that will help. At this age if there is space in the box I also add a tiny dish of moist soft food in the box to encourage the babies to start eating (I use soaked chicken raiser with a dash of Neocare hand rearer Make sure it's a heavy dish that they won't tip over (like a tiny ceramic ramekin) or use a bit of blue tack to push it onto the base of the box and hold it in place
November 1, 200816 yr Author Thank you very much everyone. I have seed in the bedding for the babies and their is also a millet in the box. Lets hope that she can raise them all herself. Thank you very much.
