Posted November 1, 200816 yr How many budgies can I fit comfortably, on a permanent basis, in an aviary that is almost 6 feet high, 5 feet long, and 5 feet wide? Edited November 1, 200816 yr by Jen144
November 1, 200816 yr Author About 25- 28 if not breeding and no nestboxes. Okay thanks. Is there any way work out how many can fit based on the size? (I've heard of a way but I cannot remember it..it was on here I think, but I can't find it again)

(I've heard of a way but I cannot remember it..it was on here I think, but I can't find it again) I dont use calculations. I just know from my experience of similar aviaries. Perching is all important and more than a couple of feeding stations and water drinkers. Edited November 1, 200816 yr by Neat
November 1, 200816 yr The victorian department of primary industries has guidelines on their website which include a calculation
November 1, 200816 yr About 25- 28 if not breeding and no nestboxes. That seems a lot of budgies for a smallish aviary. I have one that size and only have 4 canaries and 4 finches in it and that seems enough.
November 1, 200816 yr okay, well here's a doozy for you According to the DSE guidelines in that size aviary you should be keeping 5-6 birds BUT if you call yourself a breeder and all the birds are one sex then you can keep 38 in that size!!!
November 7, 200816 yr okay, well here's a doozy for you :hi: According to the DSE guidelines in that size aviary you should be keeping 5-6 birds BUT if you call yourself a breeder and all the birds are one sex then you can keep 38 in that size!!! Well that doesnt make much sense....
November 7, 200816 yr Tell me about it, no wonder people get confused about how many they can keep. Thinking about it I probably have more than the non-breeder amount in my aviary but they are mixed sex birds rather than single sex so I'm probably going against the guidelines myself
November 8, 200816 yr Wow... that is a large number difference. But if it is the same sex then it sorta makes sense since there wouldn't be fighting for partners and for nest boxes.
November 8, 200816 yr That number is for an aviarry with NO nest boxes, actually it can completely screw up the dynamics having same sex aviaries which is why I keep mine mixed, with no nest boxes the problems are generally few even in a mixed aviary
