Please HELP,

we have (had) the most beautiful pair of budgies that have just produced a gorgeous batch of 5 babies. We were just cleaning out the cage, when before I knew it, Parra, the mother bird flew out of the cage, and is GONE!!!

The father is fantastic, well, has been over the past weeks. Is it likely that he will take over the rearing completely?? The babies range from 3 weeks 6 days, to 2 weeks 5 days.

I am totally devastated, the kids and I have been blubbering for hours, and are just at a loss for what to do!!

I have read that they are not ready to survive on their own before 6 weeks, so am at a loss for what to do. I have hand rearing formula here, as the mum adandonded one of her babies early on, then after a week of hand feeding it, she re-united with it and has been fantasic. I feel so bad, it all happened so quickly, and in over 2 years, she has never done this before.

Please, can anyone give me some advice on how the fathers usually cope in a situation like this. Do I need to step up around the clock??? I'll do anything!!

PLease...help

Hi & Welcome ... Sorry to hear of the Hen flying away ...

It has happen to the rest of us ...

Dad will do just fine - Infact most breeders take the hen ( mother) away and leave the dad to do the raising

the last 1-2 weeks ...

You can help buy feeding soft foods like egg & biccy mixes.

Fruits & Veggies with added multigrain / Brown bread ...

These soft foods help the dad feed the babies a lot easier then on plain seed ....

I hope that this helps ... Feel free to ask as many questions That's what we are all hear for

There is also a FAQ'S page full of great info :)

Thank you so much, we are all devastated.

My six year old is beside herself, we are so attached to out little friends, they are a huge part of our everyday life.

fingers crossed that 'Matta', the father, will do well, and I can only hope that we can find a new mate for him one day. Any advice on where I can contact a good breeder to get a new female???

They were just the perfect pair, I am so upset that this happened. I feel bad that I can even consider a new budgie, but Matta just does not look right sitting there by himself.

Thank you so much for hearing us, the kids are sitting here with me saying, "what do the people say!! what do the people say!!" I am hoping for the unbelieveable miracle that she will fly back home. Has that ever happened to anyone???

take care everyone, I hope this never happens to anyone else, it's devastating!!!

It sure has happened! many times before infact :) Some escaped birds have come back home, even as late as after 5 days.

Put a cage outside with seed in it and the door open. Put it in a position where she will be able see and/or hear her partner.

Good luck and i really hope she returns.

Yes I have gotten 1 of the 4 that have flown away so it does happen ...

There are a few breeders on here ... Where about are you located?

I am out past Parramatta in Sydney.

We seriously can all not stop crying!!! I don't know what to do with my eldest, nothing is calming her down!!!

That is really sad. I don't think there is much you can do, they are grieving, understandably. Just affirm their feelings and let them be sad while they process what has happened to them. There's not much else you can do but be a loving mum.

But in the meantime, I hope they can still enjoy the babies and seeing the dad raise them.

Yes I have had one come back before... it was a few hours later though. Maybe the maternal instinct will give her the drive to find her way back. I sure hope so, for your sake, but the reality is that the majority don't come back unfortunately.

I really hope all works out the best for you guys.

awww I am really sorry to hear about your bird flying off. Matta should be fine to look after the chicks and take care of them like neat said. Dad's are usually pretty good. Hope your kids start to feel better soon. Good luck in finding a new Hen.

You have received the best advice here, I just wanted to pop in and say welcome.

Thank you so much eveyone. Once I figure out how to post a photo, I will. one of the babies looks so much like its mum, the others.....well I think they were all the post-mans!!!! Our pair having this clutch have given the kids so much joy, and now I will be super reluctant to let any of the babies go to a new home.

Would it be possible for Matta 'the dad' to breed with another hen one day, or are budgies life partners....have we given poor Matta no choice in a now celebate life????

Edited by parra-matta

They can definitely bond with others. In fact, in my experience they tend to always pair up, not stay single.

Budgies will breed with another budgie they are not partners for life.

Sorry to hear about Parra, I hope she comes back. I had one of my hens escape twice and she came back both times I still have her and her and her partner just hatched their first chick.

Hope she comes back!!

Once I figure out how to post a photo, I will.

Hi and welcome. I'm so sorry you have had to join on such sad circumstances. Hugs to you all. I agree with the others... I'd just add that you could make up some posters (get the kids to help) that you could put up in the neighbourhood with her picture... someone might see her, or she may fly into someone's back yard... Good luck and best wishes... maesie xo
