Posted October 29, 200816 yr What causes red eyes. Have 2 matched yellow female chicks with red eyes. Parents not related hen is a mottly greeny blue cock greeny grey. Also not related but bred by self a pale mauve hen and blue cock have produced a red eyed chick, too early yet to get proper colour
October 29, 200816 yr I had a red eyed chick from two normal greens she turned out to be cinnamon as the father is split for cinnamon. But your birds could be Cinnamon, carrying Cinnamon or they could be split for Ino. Not sure. I'd wait for others to reply as I have no idea what I'm talking about....Sorry
October 29, 200816 yr if the eyes darken up then they will be cinnamon or rececive pieds. As neat points out these are called plum eyes. Red are Lutinos (yellow) Albinos (white) Lacewing (cinnamon markings and either white or yellow) and fallows (I will let someone else explain the difference between fallow and lacewing, I don't know the difference, I think fallows can be other colours beside white and yellow) If you can post pics when they feather up someone should be able to tell you what they are :party0011: Either way I think is in order! :party0011:
October 29, 200816 yr Do understand that these are all sex-linked genes except the Fallow Gene which is recessive, so if you get any of these mutations in the nest it means that your cock bird is carrying the mutation but is not expressing the gene himself. A hen will always express the gene if she has only 1 but the cock bird must carry 2 sex linked gene to express the gene and be visible. That is how you get surprises in the nest. If you post a picture we can help you figure out what you have . Lacewings are a combo of Ino (white or yellow) gene with the cinnamon gene. Fallow is a recessive gene which means that both parents need to be fallows themselves or they both need to be split to fallow which means each parent contributes 1 fallow gene to the baby. Hen or Cock can both be split and NOT visibly express this gene.
October 30, 200816 yr Author Read your reply this arvo(thurs), went out to get photos, and of course batteries flat. will take and send when charged up again. The oher nice thing happening is my chicks are, according to private buyers and one Pet Shop, (BIG) for the ages that they are at time of sale, I usually sell around 6 weeks old. Getting harder though as I have so many pastel colours, cream or white with splotches of colour and each is so lovely (to me), and the bulk of them have the cinnamon wings I had a red eyed chick from two normal greens she turned out to be cinnamon as the father is split for cinnamon. Tried to get photos, but batteries flat, so waiting on charge up. Lutinos is a phrase I have head, my Husband bought a yellow hen,('cause he wanted), when we got home and I noticed the red eyes I freaked, (I never wanted a yellow bird, was not in my agenda). These babies though have no conection with her broods, and she has not produced a red eye. Thank you for your replyif the eyes darken up then they will be cinnamon or rececive pieds. I am a real real beginner who is over the hill before she starts learning the ABC'S about Budgies. I am sure I will soon learn, and when I get some photos on the site, that will have to be a bonus. Thank youRed eyes are Lacewings, Fallows and Inos Plum are cinnamon and rec pieds
