Posted October 28, 200816 yr I have a hen that is laying eggs in the aviary, there is nothing in the aviary she can use as a nestbox so she is just dropping them in the sand on the floor. She had a clutch in May and is a bad mother so i do not want to breed from her but is there anything i can do to stop her from laying. i am worried it could be not good for her health to be producing eggs as much as she does. She and her mate are very close so i thought about seperating them but then they would still be able to hear each other because my 2 aviaries are next to each other. Is there anything i can do to stop her?
October 28, 200816 yr Are you able to pull her out and put her into a cage???? That way you can darken her off earlier? to decrease her hormones .... Is she old ?

Is she old ? i have not really sure of her age, i think about 3 years old. i got given her and she has been like it since i got her. she was making nests in her quarantine cage. she was doing it before daylight saving started so how early would i have to cover her up. Would she stress if i seperate her from her mate, i got them as a pair and they hang around in the aviary together and do not mix with the other budgies at all.
November 3, 200816 yr It's a tough one Deb... mmm! One of my hens did the same thing, she also had trouble with egg binding. She did stop though. I'm also finding eggs in my aviary at the moment too. Not sure who they are coming from though... :star: I know the best thing is to reduce her daylight hours... as Neat said. Could you put them both in a cage in the Breeding room??? Cover them early... less daylight hours. Offer her plenty of calcium, maybe put it in her water or give her cuttlefish bone? I know my hens go crazy over it around breeding time. How is she health wise? And signs of tiredness, lacking in anything?? Other than that... I'm not sure. Hopefully someone else with more experience can help you.
November 3, 200816 yr Author She is showing no signs of tiredness, she is very healthy. She is the hen who just makes a nest anywhere so i think she will still do it even if i move her. Is there anything you can give hens to reduce their hormone levels so they are not interested in breeding.

November 3, 200816 yr Author I might ring a avian vet and talk to them, she has been like it since i got her. She is Roxys mum so there is no way i will ever breed with her again.
November 5, 200816 yr Author I rang up the only avian vet around me and was talking to the receptionist about the hen. I got told that there are injections but she would have to go once a week for a few weeks to try a few different types to see what worked for her. I am not sure if i want to put her through all that. She also informed me the reason some hens are very fertile is because there diet is too good so i should stop giving her seed and vegies and put her on just pellets. I will not be doing that. what is it about vets promoting a all pellet diet? i am going to try putting her by herself and cover her early at night and she if that helps.

Isnt it funny, Deb ....how they said her diet on seeds and vegies was TOO GOOD and their solution is to put her on a not so good pellet diet.
November 5, 200816 yr = PELLETS i agree KAZ HAHAHAHAH..... okay Yeah Deb cover her and see how she goes

I would separate her from the other budgies, especially her mate, and bring her indoors so you can monitor and regulate the sunlight hours closely. Hens can and do lay up to 10-14 days after mating. I agree it's important to keep up the Calcium levels via cuttlefish and calcium in the water. Keep her isolated and remove the all the eggs every 7th day. If she is still laying after 21 days, talk to your vet again about options. Or send her to the Pet Shop. Edited November 5, 200816 yr by renee
November 17, 200816 yr Author Just thought i would update, i have had great results from moving her. The hen got moved 10 days ago to a cage and she had a egg bum when i moved her so she laid a egg that day but has not layed anymore. She is very happy in the cage and has not been calling for her mate at all. I will reintroduce her into the avairy when she is out of breeding condition but in a different aviary to her partner.
