My New Pastel Flock!

Featured Replies

Posted

I went for a long drive today and collected together 4 beautiful babes for my new flock. I like the pastel colours and this is what I would like to accentuate in my breeding eventually (first timer). They are in quarantine as are the budgie and cockatiel I rescued the other day (seperate rooms to todays babies as well) and little Ben is in my daughters room, as he is her little buddy B)

The photo's arent great as I didn't want to disturb them too much as they have had a long day of travelling.

Here they are all together...

This first one came from Portland and I think it is a boy? Please correct me if you think otherwise. He had only just left the nest in the last week or so.

The next boy came from Portland also he is about 6 months old and was having his way with his seed tray when I noticed him, he is very vocal and energetic!

The last two came from Hamilton, the first one has many colours Skyblue/tourquoise with green patches running through it. It didn't really photograph the best but are very striking, I am unsure if it is a girl or boy?

Last but not least a little pale blue and white baby that I think is a hen? Again please correct me if I am wrong...

One of the places I went had some lovely showbirds, as lovely as they were I had to stick to what I am aiming to achieve. I am aiming for pastel birds with as much colour as possible but no black. I also was tempted to get a couple that had a bit of black on them with up to four pastel colours on them, but I resisted! I spent enough money for one day!

Kaz, or anyone else qualified, could you please tell me the correct types of Budgies they are?

Thank you.

This pretty spangle is a YF2 and is moulting which is giving it its pretty patchy look. the patches of brighter colour is what she will look like when the moult has fished :sadsorry:

They're all very beautiful, love the colour combinations.

Baby budgies look so sweet and lovable, but they'll be more striking as adults... kind of a win/win situation haha

I just have to wrap my head around what goes on when they moult and why their colours change? I plan to breed the unrelated pairs and I cant wait to see the bubba's!

The colour will change because the yellow faces are yellow face type two. The main thing that distinguishes this from type one is that the colour bleeds into the body feathers. As they go through thier first moult you will notice that the new feathers grow in with the yellow tinge to them

So will the first baby shown end up looking the same as the other yf 2?

Probably pretty similiar yes. If you were to breed them together in the future you would get ones just like them ples you would also get ones which didn't have the yellow. However this is where it's tricky, these white face ones can actually be double factor yellow face which means they look like a normal white faced budgie but they carry the yellowface gene and will pass it on to their subsequent chicks :D

I think that only works for YF1 birds (white face/DF)

Pretty birds Trish

1st bird is a type 2 yellow face sky blue dilute male about 2 months old

2nd bird is a sky blue spangle male adult

3rd type 2 yellow face sky blue spangle female about 3 months old

4th sky blue dominant pied dilute female about 3 months old

As has already been mentioned, after the moult the 2 yellow face birds will probably show a lot more green

What do you think my chances are of getting any rainbows. I already have one but am unsure if it is male or female and what to pair it with when it comes time for breeding. Do you have any suggestions?
Thanks for the PM, I’ll answer here so others can comment.

A true classic rainbow is a combination of opaline, clearwing, type 2 yellow face and any shade of blue, So you don’t have all the right mutations to breed one. However there a lot of other combinations that are just as colourful. To get colours on the bird’s back you need opaline and I see that the bird in you avatar is a yellow face opaline but I can’t see the sex. Is it available for breeding? Unfortunately the dilute mutation that 2 of your birds are is recessive so unless they are paired to another dilute the chicks will have dark wings, Spangle, dominant pied and yellow face are all dominant so half of the chicks from these types will show the mutation. Opaline is sex-linked so if your bird is female none of the chicks will be opaline unless the male has the gene also. If your opaline is male his daughters will all show opaline. So to get very colourful chicks it might take 2 generations.

How to pair them to get colourful combinations! I’m sure that no matter how they are paired you will get beautiful chicks

If the yellow face opaline is male I would pair it to the type 2 yellow face sky blue spangle female. This would give you a good proportion of yellow face opaline spangle females which are very beautiful. You would also get spangles, normals and ordinary opalines with black on the wings.

If the type 2 yellow face sky blue dilute male is mated to the sky blue dominant pied dilute female the chicks would all be dilutes. Some would be yellow face sky blue dominant pied dilutes which I think you would like. You would also get chicks similar to both parents

If you paired the sky blue spangle male to the type 2 yellow face sky blue spangle female you would get some chicks similar to both birds, some normals with black wing markings, some pure whites and some yellow face whites

I hope I haven’t confused you too much!

Thank you so much Neville, you have explained it wonderfully. You really are a man in the know. I am very pleased to hear the possibilities. :D And to everyone else for your advise too :D

Unfortunately the Avatar bird in question "Ben" has F.M. and until I know more about F.M. he is in quarantine. I am not sure if I could breed with him and was hoping that maybe after his first moult his feathers would return? However the budgie I rescued the other day named "Bill" (thus I have Bill & Ben) (in quarantine also) would be a beautiful daddy once he has the all clear and I have spoilt him a bit!Unfortunately not great photo's below, his colourings are nice and bright! (Also not the cage he is staying in either).dcp_3697.jpgdcp_3696.jpg
