Posted October 27, 200816 yr Hi All - I am trying to develop my skills at determining the sex of my babies. With my last "crew" of three - I was right with the 2 boys - their ceres are now blue - but the new owner of the third baby says she thinks it is a boy and I think it is a girl. I should mention that I am using their behaviour and personality since hatching as the main factor - as I am still not very good at determining sex from the cere. Here are two pictures of the third baby, which is now 4 1/2 months old - what are your thoughts? Also, I have a new clutch of five and have (I think) a pretty good idea of the sex of three, but am unsure of the other two. Would you mind giving me your opinion on all five? I am also following the tip of taking pictures of the babies and making note of my guess, based on the cere, and checking the pictures again once the sex is positively determined, to help develop my skills - thanks for that great tip! Baby 1 - I think it's a girl (the babies are about 3 - 4 weeks old) Baby 2 - Boy? Baby 3 - Boy? Baby 4 - This one has me stumped! Baby 5 - Another difficult one! Thanks!! :fear

October 27, 200816 yr I'm going along with neat, it's hard to tell from photo's, in my own nest I can tell straight away Edited October 27, 200816 yr by splat
October 27, 200816 yr The 4 1/2 months old one looks female but it is hard to tell from the photo whether the cere is brown or pink. If it is pink then it will be male, it is a recessive pied and males of this mutation have pink ceres Baby 1 is male. It is also a recessive pied so it's cere will stay pink all it's life Baby 2 is a female sky blue normal Baby 3 is male dark green normal Baby 4 is a female sky blue opaline Baby 5 is a female green opaline Opaline is a sex-linked gene so: Unless the mother has an opaline wing pattern like the last 2 chicks then any babies she has with this wing pattern will be female Edited October 27, 200816 yr by Neville
October 27, 200816 yr Don't forget to let us know how we go when they are mature PLEASE!! I think the first one is a hen. the other babies. I can't tell. I'll go with neville he's never wrong

Here is the picture.Great job everyone - I can always rely on you!
October 16, 200915 yr Gendering from pictures at a young age is not 100%. It is much easier to do in real life with the bird in front of you. Even with high definition photos, I have taken two photos of the same chick where the cere looked white in one picture and pink in the next. One would guess female for the first and male for the second photo of the same chick when i know it to be a male in real life.

Baby #2, second clutch), is now a 1yr. old budgie. This bird now belongs to a friend of mine, but was originally bred by Dragonwing. As Dragonwing stated it has been living under the pretense of being 'female' . I guess I was blind . I was surprised when I saw the disciussion and immediately asked my friend for pictures. However, Boy or not my friend is very happy with the adoption of Willow Baby #2 and Spring (100% female) Baby #5  Willow, Kind of looking male. What do you think everyone? ">"> ......For general interest I have added my friends picture of Willow`s clutch mate. Spring (Dragonwings Baby #5, also listed in the above discussion). "> Heather
