Posted October 27, 200816 yr I notice last week that the sand seem to be disappearing from a gap between my bricks on the base and then the next day i saw a mouse running around the outside of the aviary. On the weekend i filled in the gap and went to Woolies and grab some traps. I am just using peanut butter and plastic traps and so far i have caught 8 so it was not just one mouse, a whole family has taken up resident under the aviary. I know they are not getting into the aviary because none of the sand on the base has been moved. I have also put baits out so hopefully i can get rid of them all. They are so game that they are even coming out during the day, on sunday morning i was sitting watching the budgies and saw a mouse come out from a pile of bricks i have stored near the aviary and i watched it got to the trap and get caught, it was a great sight to see.
October 27, 200816 yr Gosh Deb, I wish my mice were as stupid as yours, I think my ones are eligable for joining MENSA Edited October 27, 200816 yr by melbournebudgies
October 27, 200816 yr :ratty: It's the weather - changing from hot to cold to raining to hot ARGGGGHHHHH Crazy stuff mate ... hope you get them all
October 27, 200816 yr Good work Deb. Maybe move the bricks and anything else around the aviary away so they don't have anywhere to hide. Don't forget steel wool is excellent to block up holes once you think you have them all. I hope you get them all soon!
October 27, 200816 yr Author Got another one, count is 9 now. I have noticed that when i scared them they are running into the bushes behind my aviary so i say that is where they are living as well so i have put baits under the bushes.
October 27, 200816 yr If there is mulch etc... under the bushes, I'd rake it all out and trim the under side of the bushes... so there is less security there.
October 27, 200816 yr Author If there is mulch etc... under the bushes, I'd rake it all out and trim the under side of the bushes... so there is less security there. There is alot of broken sticks and dead leaves under the trees but they sit so low to the ground that is hard to get under them. It might be time to do some trimmimg.

October 27, 200816 yr Author Took me and my son 1 1/2 hours this afternoon to clean up under the trees, there was alot of branches to trim and heaps of leaves to rake . While we were cleaning saw 2 mice and my son managed to tread on one and killed it. 10 mice dead now.

October 27, 200816 yr We don't seem to have an issue with mice... I think the rats and snakes keep them away!
October 27, 200816 yr The most successful mousetrap we have used are these ones............ http://cgi.ebay.com.au/Humane-Mouse-Trap-C...id=p3286.c0.m14 BUT they are cheaper in Bunnings hardware....$2.65 each. Work a treat. Catches them alive for those that get squeamish about dead ones. Edited October 27, 200816 yr by KAZ
October 27, 200816 yr I saw those at Bunnings Kaz but I was a little dubious about them, might pick up a couple now that I know someone who has actually used them with success. I also saw at bunnings a little dropper bottle of baiting gel which claims to be better than peanut butter or nutella!
October 27, 200816 yr I will look for that baiting gel then. Those mousetraps are great BUT catch them alive. Mouse walks in, trap tips up and shuts...dead easy.
October 27, 200816 yr I have decided that any mice I catch alive will be released into my wheelie bin, that way they can hitch a ride to the tip where I'm sure there are millions of mice already anyway After not having much luck I think I might go back for some of that gel too, it was about $5 from recollection for a bottle about the size of an antrid bottle
October 27, 200816 yr The good thing too about those traps is they can be washed. And the end cap comes off to smear some bait on. To keep my dogs interested in being mousers and ratters, the mice are dropped into a large plastic crate and the dog goes in after them. YUMMY :fear
October 28, 200816 yr We must have very hungry mice down here!!! We used those traps at work in our factory, we caught heaps of mice... but most of them chewed their way out of the tiny, tiny hole in the 'lid'. They were only set over night too... so it's not like they were in them for days :ratty: :ratty: :ratty: :ratty: :ratty: :ratty: :ratty: :ratty: :ratty: Edited October 28, 200816 yr by maesie
October 28, 200816 yr Crazy things they are .... Score on your son deb .... Well squashed : :sadsorry: .. I hope that you got/get them nothing worse cause then you feel dirty even if your place is spotless ....
October 28, 200816 yr Author No signs of any mice last night so hopefully seeing i cleaned their hiding place they have disappeared.
October 28, 200816 yr Well done Deb, I still haven't caught a single one despite my expensive traps :sadsorry:
October 28, 200816 yr Author Well done Deb, I still haven't caught a single one despite my expensive traps :sadsorry: What a pain, hope you get some soon. i was surprised that the cheap Woolies traps worked but half of mine were babies.
