Posted October 26, 200816 yr My aviary is due for its weekly clean out, but my pair of quails have laid 3 eggs on the floor during the week. What do it do? I would like to keep the eggs and see if they have babies. Do i just clean around the eggs or is it okay to move them?
October 26, 200816 yr Depends...quails are in the habit of laying eggs any old place everywhere in an aviary. At that stage you can just lift them up into a container and clean and put them back. BUT when a quail wants to nest they then "collect" their eggs in the aviary and roll them into a nesting spot. Have yours begun to "nest" yet or are they just laying them anywhere ?
October 26, 200816 yr Author They are just laying them where ever at the moment. I think the nest will be in the back corner behind a seed dish. I will gently remove the eggs and then put them back in the same spots when i have finished cleaning Thanks so much

October 26, 200816 yr good luck. Quails are nice to have at the bottom of the avairy. I've always been told that the males fight a lot though. Good luck with the egg laying..
October 28, 200816 yr oh yeah they fight like anything! Even a second female introduced could soon find herself all bloodied & featherless. I was lucky with my first pair, bred well and were good parents. Then a magpie got my female when she got out and I'd almost caught her.
October 28, 200816 yr Hey JB- its not that they fight exactly, they just seem to love each other.... almost to death, they just cant seem to control themselves Lol I just cleaned out my quail eggs there would have been twenty or so, she lays but wont sit so the dogs got them for lunch. October 28, 200816 yr Author I found one broken yesterday How will i know if she will sit on them or if they are just laying for fun? I don't want rotten eggs at the bottom of my aviary
October 28, 200816 yr She will usually sit after around the 5th egg is laid - that's what mine used to do. LOL except the time she laid 33 and still didn't sit on any!
October 31, 200816 yr Mine seem to wait for 8 eggs before they sit. eight is normally when they sit but if the have more than that they will wait till they finished laying before collecting then once all collected the sit quail eggs don't incubate until they collect them all just the more they lay the least out come i had 30 eggs for seemed like forever then when i tossed them 11 were a day off hatching so i just leave mine then once collected all eggs i let them sit for their presumed cycle before discarding i find always get chicks with out fail this way Edited October 31, 200816 yr by Neat
