Posted October 26, 200816 yr Hi Today being a cloudy day, I had Coco next to the window and looking closely at him in the light, he has violet on both sides of his neck which I have never noticed before. He is a YF2 and is currently on his third molt and has lots of green coming through on his chest and where his tail starts. Does this mean that he is carrying violet? If so, does this change the colour that he will end up? Also, do all YF2's end up green? The feathers coming through seem really quite green. I tried to take a picture but it is really hard to see the violet on the photo. Thanks, Tamara
October 26, 200816 yr All Yellow Face 2 do not up completely green it depends on individual gene on that particular bird. Do you have a picture you can post of him? It sounds like he probably is carrying the gene but a picture would help determine it. When you take a picture of a violet bird do it in the sunlight or on a sunny day by the window that is best I know violets are so hard Merlin's color is hard to capture too. The flash makes him too blue or sometimes washed out so with no flash is best.
October 26, 200816 yr I have violet very strongly in my flock and i find that most of them also carry the violet hue around the neck too. I dont know if it means they are carrying it, but they all came from violet parents so it wouldn't surprise me
October 26, 200816 yr I remember Kaz saying it does mean they are carrying it especially if they are sky blue violets
October 26, 200816 yr Single factor violet can be very hard to see on a sky blue or a mauve (or a green) and often the "Hue" around the neck is the only sign. On a cobalt bird you should be able to see the single factor easily. Double factor violet is very distinct on both sky blue and cobalt birds
October 26, 200816 yr Author Finally found my camera cable! Thanks for the violet photo taking tips, I managed to get a couple that show it I also took one which shows the green coming through on his tail. Thanks for all replies. He usually hates the camera but this time he started flirting with it when I was taking the close ups
October 26, 200816 yr he's a cutie! I'm not good with genetics so I'll leave that for the experts... but he's a cutie
