Posted October 25, 200816 yr Hi guys I am interested in opinions as to what coloured babies Boof and Sophie might have. They have just had their first 2 babies and as these are my pet types, I will be selling the babies as hand tamed pets. I realise these are all just guesses, as I dont know the genetics of them other than greywing. I'm keeping my fingers crossed Boof is split for blue so we get some blue types as well. Sophie is opaline - my understanding is that being that she is opaline the babies wont be unless dad is?? Anyway, please let me know what you think. Boof - Light green greywing Sophie - YF2 skyblue opaline greywing (this is an old picture of her and since her moult, her yellow has bled )
October 25, 200816 yr ummm... they will have... how you say... very cute babies I think your right about the opaline gene but I've been wrong many a time before..
October 25, 200816 yr Greywing normals, maybe blues if dad is split, all will be light green (or skyblue) and about half should be yellowface
October 25, 200816 yr Author I just wish that he was opaline so they would have those pretty wing markings she carries. Nevertheless, Boof is still a nice looking boy I think
October 25, 200816 yr If the cock is split for opaline about half the chicks will be opaline greywing
October 25, 200816 yr Yeah... I agree Neville ( lol not that i ever not agree with you ) Lets hope that Dad is spilt mate ...
October 25, 200816 yr With my advanced knowledge of budgie genetics I think I can say with all certainty that... One of them will have to come and live up here!! Edited October 25, 200816 yr by Hills
October 25, 200816 yr Boof is so handsome, I really like the light green I can't wait to see the chicks Edited October 25, 200816 yr by Tam
October 30, 200816 yr Hi Sunnie At the risk of sounding overly eager, have you had any more new arrivals in this clutch?? Edited October 30, 200816 yr by Hills
October 31, 200816 yr Looking forward to seeing pics of babies to see if dad is split opaline. Most of my cocks are split for opaline and or cinnamon and it's a pain in the neck especially when you are hoping for a normal hen and you keep getting opaline and cinnamon hens.
October 31, 200816 yr Yes I know but it's a pain when it comes out in spangle because you get marked against that but the problem is cinnamon gives you feather and opaline gives you size so with out the cinnamon my birds wouldn't have the feather they have. This bird would of won the best uncapped bird in Victoria if she wasn't cinnamon
November 7, 200816 yr Author Well it seems, unfortunately, that Sophie is just like her mother and is plucking the babies. I only noticed last night when I decided to update this post with a photo and noticed that none of the babies have down. While it isnt a serious thing at this moment, I know it will become serious so I have been trying to work out what to do. I have a tcb pair who havent had any babies and are sitting on (their last) clutch of clear eggs. Sophies youngest, even though about a week old, is still quite small, so I have decided to try it in their nest, as their eggs were due to hatch a couple of days ago and I did this successfully recently, fostering small babies to a mum who had clear eggs that were due to hatch. If they take the youngest and feed it, then I will add the next baby and hopefully foster the 3rd oldest baby to another nest who has similar aged babies. I am hoping to leave the last two to dad, as I dont want to overload my foster parents either. Any thoughts on this? Would the oldest babies be old enough to leave with dad?
November 8, 200816 yr Author Well the tcbs have adopted the first baby, it's crop is a lot fuller than when I put it in this morning. My next question is, would it be too soon to add another baby there? The cock has been in the nest box with the hen for some time so I am guessing he is already helping feed their "new baby".
November 8, 200816 yr I don't have answers for you Sunnie, but that is good you caught it so quickly thank goodness.
November 9, 200816 yr Author Thanks Elly Well I did put another baby in with the first and I was away overnight. When I got back today, Microsoft Corporation ® TCB is being very protective over "her" babies and both their crops are very full. The other baby is also doing well with its new foster family. I am going to add the two older ones to the tcb nest now she is mothering the younger ones and hopefully in another week my babies will be looking a lot fluffier!! I cant tell as yet what sex the babies are, at this point, sorry to say Hills, but they all look like hens to me, but they are still very young. I will post another picture in a week and see if we can get some other opinions
