Posted March 22, 200520 yr Hughey Front View Hughey Ariel View Hughey seems to hobble and stumble somewhat. He also loses his balance every so often. Dewey Ariel View Dewey Front View I know that dewey has splay legs, if i secure them together do i do this so his legs are secured under his body or pulled out behind him? what would be the best way? I really hope you can help.
March 23, 200520 yr The first 2 pics look like the babies spine isn't straight. I hope i'm wrong. I have never seen a splay legged budgie before. It's horrible. What happen's to the bird if the legs can't be straightened? Can it still have a fairly normal life?
March 23, 200520 yr Oh god, those poor babies. Please, please, please take them to seen an avian vet. They need help, maybe x-rays. I'm not sure what a vet could do or if they can even do anything but please go get an expert opinion from an avian vet. If you don't have one already, you might be able to locate one in your area using this website: http://aav.org/vet-lookup/ I hope there is something that can be done. These chicks are severely deformed. Did you breed these birds yourself? If so, I'd advise that you didn't use the parents to breed again. I'm not an expert but I'm sure these things could possibly be genetic and this isn't the type of problem you want to breed into future budgies. -Terri
March 23, 200520 yr poor budgies. Those pictures have really upset me. I hope you get things sorted out sooner rather than later and either correct the birds deformities or put them out of their misery. It must be very hard for you.
March 23, 200520 yr http://www.cagenbird.com/splayed_leg.htm try this link it displays how to do the yarn and hobble method hope this helps and all the best
March 23, 200520 yr their a couple of thoughts on it one not enough calcium when in the egg or the hen sits to tight i have just had one out of a pair of birds that have had 6 rounds of eggs over the years and this is the first and only one from these birds i checked my records and these birds have had 22 chicks with this being the only one i lean towards the calcium idea as this was the last planned time to use this hen in my breeding programme as she was at the age when i retire my hens for health reasons
March 23, 200520 yr yes definitely take it to the vets to see if they can do anything, i dont think the bird would be very happy and probably wouldnt even beable to perch at all. it is severely deformed and would probably not stand a chance as it grows up. let us know what the vet said anf how things go wont you?
March 24, 200520 yr Thank you so much for all your help. I have finally found an Avian Vets near us. I will be taking them asap. Alot of people have said to me that i should put them to sleep, they are both so happy or seem to be and get so excited when they are allowed out of the cage. The mum is looking after them and feeding them well and it just seems so mean to end two such cute little lives. I will keep you posted on what the vet says. Eve
March 24, 200520 yr If, and I mean IF, they have a chance of some sort of quality in their little lives, then dont out them to sleep. It may prove costly keeping them alive and well, but, they didnt ask to be bred. Would you keep them yourself and raise them if they are able to live reasonably? You seem like you genuinely care, your care may well prove costly, or painful, but please, keep CARE in the front of your mind, above everything else. At the moment, those little darlings dont KNOW theyare 'different' so dont worry over that too much. It looks awful to us, BUT, its NORMAL to them. If you cant (and no offence here) afford to keep them going veterinary wise (thats if they CAN live with quality) then somehow, I will try and help, even if it means getting them over to the north west of england. Very sad, but MAYBE not devoid of hope. Blessings, Anne. ps my email addy is chirpy001@hotmail.com if you need to natter. I truly will do all I can to help. This is very sad, BUT, maybe NOT so sad in the little budgies eyes, given the right care and devotion. Dont give up, and dont let anyone force you into putting them to sleep if you really see that they are doing okay, and are not miserable. You will know, you will feed off them. Watch them closely, they will tell you. Anne xx Edited March 24, 200520 yr by chirpy
March 24, 200520 yr Very wise words Chirpy. I agree, if there is hope of them having a quality life then go for it. They deserve the best!!!
March 27, 200520 yr Hi All, Just to let you know I have been to the vets with Hughey and Dewey. Hughey has a curvature of the spine but can still perch sucessfully unfortunately nothing can be done about his spine. Dewey has splay legs but they are very servere. The vet has said that there is only a 10% chance we can get them perfect. The vet has suggested that i should put them both to rest as they are not normal. I have had a long hard think and have decided that the still have a good quality of life and i will give them a chance, if there do appear to be in pain or be unhappy then i will have to have another think but for the meantime i feel they deserve to get that chance. The mother is still feeding them even though I have removed the nest and placed the birds in small padded tupperware dishes. Dewey dose not like having his legs together (i have used the makeup sponge method for now) and seems to use all his energy on trying to get it off!! Thank you for all your help.
March 27, 200520 yr that is very sad i hope they do not suffer. it must be very hard for you right now. very wise words from chirpy, 'watch them closely and they will tell you'. thankyou for letting us know what happened. i hope they will enjoy the time they have with you looking after them, it sounds like they are in good hands... best wishes to you and those little chicks x
March 27, 200520 yr Well done to you evemallia,it's so nice to hear an outcome from things. Please keep us up to date with them,I know you've got all the hard work but maybe we can come up with ideas to help. Julie
March 28, 200520 yr I'm so glad that you're giving them the care they need. Have they got their colours yet??? I'm sure they're looking very sweet!
April 8, 200520 yr Hello all. Just keeping you all up to date. Unfortunately we woke up and found Hughey dead. May his little sole RIP. :angel1: Dewey is doing well although we have now renamed her Splay!!! As the vet would not sort her splayed legs for us we have tried ourselves. I tried to make a hobble but that didn't work so i used the make-up sponge trick again. She has worked out how to get it off and her legs just aren't getting better Splay can fly (but has big problems landing!!) She can mover aroung the floor and the base of the cage okay (bless her she looks like a fury little crab but with only 2 legs) She likes to climb the cage but panics when she gets to the top and falls (I worry so much when i'm at work!) It's a real shame as she has lovely colours now. Her head and wings are grey with dark tips and the body feathers are a lovely electric blue. All she needs now is a customer landing gear and a little skateboard so she can get around quicker. thank you all for your help and your support. Eve and Splay xxx
April 8, 200520 yr i am sorry about hughey can splay perch at all? do you have something soft lining the bottom of her cage? poor little thing, i feel very sorry for her. glad that her colours have come through though she sounds very pretty. keep up your good work, and i hope she remains comfortable love pixie x Edited April 8, 200520 yr by pixie25
April 8, 200520 yr All I can do is mimic what pixie25 has said and I hope she is doing well and that she is coping well. Best wishes :angel1:
April 9, 200520 yr You're such a good owner evemallia, You may have to slowly adapt a cage for a special needs budgie. She certainly sounds to be a gutsy little thing. Sorry about Hughey but I think nature really does know best sometimes. Julie
