Playgrounds For Birds

Hello!

I was playing around on ebay and saw few playgrounds for birds.

Then I've start thinking how does it work and does my budgie need it or it is just a waist of money..

Our little one is about8 weeks old and his wings still growing after clipping, so he's not flying yet. I think that he's not moving enough... yes, he's "running" around his cage and he so funny when we're letting him out of the cage he's walking on the floor (it's so cute :) he and his little steps)

anyway.. What do you think about these playgrounds? And please let me know, in case you've got one, if your budgie actually using it. It's seems complicated to me.. :P Does bird going to know what to do with all that stuff...?

Thanks

Hi Marina

I bought a budgie play gym a couple of months ago, and my budgie has only just started to play with it recently - he is very shy at these sort of things. He doesn't really sit on it, but will pull the swing off the hooks and pull it around  - he seems to love it.

I personally think that they are a good idea so that your bird has a safe place to go when they are out of the cage - on that note it is probably not the best idea to let your baby walk on the ground - accidents can happen very easily. I think a lot of people put them on the top of the cage.

Just be sure to check what materials it is made from eg. food safe colouring, stainless steel eg. Mine came with a copper bell that is toxic to birds so it had to be removed.

Happy shopping :D

My husband built one for Cosmo out of cardboard boxes, perches and a wooden ladder. It has some toys too. It's for our study when we have him with us when we're working.

He liked it at first, but now whenever he's on there he doesn't stay too long, he flies onto my shoulder instead. I think it's because when he's on my shoulder he can see out the window. There's only one window and no way of putting his gym near the window. It's funny because his playgym is higher than my shoulder and he still prefers my shoulder. But, he doesn't mind playing on it now and again.

Mine have one that i made myself and it fits the entire top of their cage - its nothing special and cost under $15, but my birds play on it all day and love it

I bought one because I was lazy and didn't build one but if you can that is the way to go. I put it on top of their cage when Merlin is out he loves to be on it and sit on the top perch and sing :party0011:. I also feed him there his different treats too so he associates it with fun :hap:. A good investment indeed.

You have been given great advice the only thing i will add to this is ...

Why??

Because often they are made from toxic metal such as zink plated or copper. Stainless steel is recommended for bells, but its best not to have shiny toys anyway as it can distract the birds from bonding to you.

Just a note, I leave Merlin's bells as long as he is not obessed they don't spend all day on the play gym and they love to ding them so personally if you don't have issues leave them :(, but I agree not to keep them in their cage as that is where they are in the majority of the time and then it can become an issue. Moderation is okay, even a mirror you might have is fun once or twice a week as long as you don't see frustrating or obessive behavior.
