My Hen Is Hurting Her Baby?

Featured Replies

Posted

My hen has blood on the feathers around her beak, and the older one of the babies has got no feathers on his back(near the head). Is it blood? It looks a reddy pinky colour. What do I do? Do I leave it in the nest? or Hand Raise it?? Help please!

Please reply as soon as possible!

Will post some photos soon.

Remove the hen for now until you can assess the situation. Does dad feed the babies and how old are the babies. The hen is a danger to the chicks.

I have got the hen out. Do I just give her normal food? How do I know that the dad will feed them? I haven't seen the dad feed them yet. My sister said he did last time.

Check there crops now, if they are fuill then you have quite a few hours up your sleeve before getting too worried about whether they are being fed. Just leave them be and watch from a distance and keep an eye on whether dad goes in the box and whether their crops are kept full.

The first baby was born on the 7th of october(this is the one being hurt.) The other one was born around the 10-13th of october(I'm not sure!) There crops are full.ThanksPLEASE REPLY AS SOON AS POSSIBLE!My profile picture is about the same colour as the dad!The mum is a violet purple colour.

Keep the mother away far enough so the Dad cannot hear her call. Watch for signs of Dad feeding the babies. Clean up the injured baby so you can be sure of how hurt it is.

thanks for the info! I think the dad has been feeding them!! They have food in their crops at 6:30, so I think they would have been fed by the dad! He did have some seed on his beak.

Thanks again for the info! How long do I keep the hen out for??

Dont put the hen back in now....Let Dad finish raising the chicks.

Check often to be sure they are being fed and their crops are full.
