Breeding in Ken's Aviary

One of the princess hens today put her foot through a fertile egg so we lost that baby. I threw out a clear egg she had and she now has two that are fertile. I checked the other two eggs and heard loud chirping coming from inside one of the eggs so I guees that one will be here tomorrow. Since she will only have two chicks now and the other hen will have six, I will swap some over to be fostered and even out the babies. I will put some temporary budgie split rings on them so I can work out who belongs to who.

I am hoping the TOE_CUTTER will like her nest nestbox as so far she isnt sure where she's meant to be. She's not real smart that one :D

The hen with the two eggs and one that was pipping yesterday had her pipping chick hatched this morning. All well :)

The hen with one new chick now has two and the other has five and one more egg to hatch.

Do these guys also hatch 2 days apart?

No, they vary a little. They can lay an egg a day or sometimes two. With hatching chicks you may get two hatch one day and one the next etc.

We have a disabled Princess hen in the aviary. One of the ones I handraised. She had an accident in the aviary once and got caught up on something Ken shouldnt have left in there. As a result she lost most of her toes on one foot. So she also wants to have a family but is having issues using the normal nestboxes. She is another one of our blue princess boy, SMOKEY's harem of three hens. She tried to lay an egg on the ground, as she couldnt cope with normal nestboxes, so today with some scrap wood I made her her own palace.

Here is TOE_CUTTERS palace..........( temporarily sitting waiting for my husband to help me hang it when he gets home. )

There is a platform instead of a perch for her to land on. She can just walk in and there she has a "lobby area" ....if she turns left she has a little step to hop over into the nesting area. The nesting area is accessible to us via a hinged hatch lid. I think it will work out...we just have to hope she likes it. Her beau SMOKEY has already checked it out. DSCF3770.jpg

Out of luck, Toecutter has decided to lay her eggs on the floor of the aviary. She has chosen a spot on the woodchips in the corner and has laid two eggs there. Another blue princess laid two eggs in a box and hasnt bothered with hers since, so I put those two eggs in Toecutters nest on the ground. Fingers crossed.

Congratulations about the new bubs. Pity about Toecutters choice of nest. I hope it works out 'down there'

 Maybe!!! The Quail... formally known as the Toecutter!

What a shame Toecutter didn't use the brilliant home you made for her :D

Good luck with her nest on the floor.

Oh Dear, LOL ..

That must be one confused bird :D

Good luck with the babies and eggs .....

Aww they're soo cute and fluffy :o!!!

If any get abandoned I put my hand up for hand rearing LOL! Although then it has to go home again :o hmm

Congratulations on all the breeding. I love gouldian babies, especially when they bob and weave when they see. Pair I had hatched 2 chicks and they were so cute.

My Princess hen might not ever lay for me, she's got a bung hip but still begs Prince who only wants to dance to her and us.

Going to sell my Paleheads as I reckon the male just isn't mature enough this year even though he's 2.
