November 10, 200816 yr Author One of the babies that fledged had an accident today. It hit into a wall or aviary wire and broke its bottom beak rather severely. Split right through the middle, with a chunk out of it and bleeding. We are off to the avian vet tomorrow to see if he can do anything with it. He said if its repairable he can "pin it" Edited November 10, 200816 yr by KAZ
November 10, 200816 yr Author Oh no Kaz, fingers crossed, what a freak accident They are pretty clumsy when first learning to fly. I will update tomorrow after the vet appointment.
November 10, 200816 yr Poor birdy clumsy thing, Hope he's okay though. Lovely parrots Kaz I use to breed Princess Parrots, Regent Parrots and a few more different types that would be over 15 years ago. Still love them though went out of them because of all the **** of writing down every egg they layed in the registered book. Some one told me it is much easier now. Actually I don't think you even need a licence for Princess Parrots now. Edited November 10, 200816 yr by splat
November 10, 200816 yr Author Chaos in the aviary today...all 7 babies out taking flying lessons. Even the one with the damaged beak was flying around like a pro and took a bit of catching. She ( we think she ) is in the carrybox ready to go to the vet in a couple of hours.
November 11, 200816 yr Fantastic pics Kaz I had to look twice at one picture, where the princess and the barraband are on the wire and you can see the bricks and window of your house behind them. It looked like my place, then I realised the princess was green and not blue LOL :hap: Â Good luck with your vet visit today, I hope the youngster pulls through and heals
November 11, 200816 yr Author Vet visit over. Very sad to take a sweet young thing like that to the vet in a cage and come home with an empty cage  Tim Oldfield was very good.....he's one of the most highly respected avian vets in Perth. He examined the poor little thing and decided that the tissue damage was too deep and it would never heal. It would not knit together. The beak was literally in half right down to the base and a large chunk was also missing on the right hand side. The baby would never be able to eat. Even trying to crop feed it would cause pain and this bird would have to be hand fed the rest of its life. The examination alone caused pain and Tim held the bird close to his chest soothing and calming it after ....he was so good with this bird. :angel1: He also said, even if it survived the infections it would get and the breaking up of the beak over time, the both top and bottom beaks would grow abnormally and it would need professional trimming every 4 weeks. He strongly recommended euthenasia. So, I came home without the bird and sadder than I thought I would be. Edited November 11, 200816 yr by KAZ

November 11, 200816 yr So sorry to hear your news Kaz. Â It's a horrible feeling walking out of the vets with an empty cage
November 11, 200816 yr Author So sorry to hear your news Kaz. It's a horrible feeling walking out of the vets with an empty cage Yeah... empty anything.....dog lead, cat carry box ....anything.  A friend of mine had her ragdoll kitten attacked last week. A tomcat came through her cat door in the middle of the night and attacked the sleeping ragdoll kitten. Had it by the throat and tried to kill it. Her other cat woke up and screamed the house down and fronted the tomcat, so my friend woke up and came out as the tomcat dropped the near lifeless kitten and ran back out through the cat door. Blood all over the floor. The kitten luckily survived nearly having its throat ripped out and after 5 days at the vet on a drip and meds...it has come home. Severely bruised around the throat still but almost back to normal. I was scared that kitten would not come home from the vets. There are some happy stories thank goodness.
