Broken Wing!

I had noticed that since he came home my little guy hadn't been holding on of his wings as tight to his body as the other and that he was only lifting it half way if he flapped on the perch. I thought I had better have a look at it and see and it's swollen and most definately broken :rip: I suspect it has been like that since well before I got him, maybe even a couple of weeks :( As he had been in the nest and not flying no one had noticed but it probably explains why he hadn't left the nest box yet despite being well and truly fledged :(

Anyway he'll be going to the vet first thing in the morning although I suspect it will be only for a strapping and some antibiotics, as from the feel of the break I'd say his wing is not recoverable so he'll be grounded for life :(

Oh no!! That's not good :rip: Sorry to hear your news. I hope your new baby is okay. Good luck tomorrow :(

awww thats no good. Sorry to hear about the poor little fella. Hope its not as bad as you suspect butitisn't looking hopeful

Let's hope he makes a full recovery MB. Keep us posted on the vet visit.

Oh man, its not nice at all. The little guy must be in so much pain. Please let us know what the vet said.

The verdict is in!

The vet completely agreed with my own diagnosis that it was an old compound fracture which had fused and that it was not repairable. He doesn't feel that any treatment is needed at this point as it would be a waste of time so I am just going to keep an eye on it. He won't ever fly.

I have decided to call him Squirt :P

No sign of infection at this stage and due to lorikeets having quite a short bowel he said he would rather wait and see before giving them to him as often they can do more harm than good in a lorie :P

Oh No poor squirt ... How can a baby break it's wing? since he won't be able to fly - will he not be able to breed too???

I am sooo sorry to hear MB ....

The vet thinks maybe when he was in the box he was doing the'hover bird' wing flapping practice thing and mum or dad has jumped into the box and landed on his shoulder pushing his wing downwards and breaking the shoulder joint.

It's unlikely he'll breed, my friend who gave me Squirt is going to let me know when the other babies hatch and I'll be getting a couple of those

He'll breed if (you want him to and) given the opportunity, a broken wing doesn't stop them.

I had a budgie named Squirt - she was a fantastic pet so if the name suits him he will be too!

got any pics for us?

I suspect tis broken wing might stop him BS, he has a lot of trouble balancing and I think mating would be very difficult

sorry to hear about poor little squirt. Hopefully he'll get used to it being broken and get better with his balance.

sorry to hear about Squirt, hope it is not causing him much discomfort.
