Hi,

okay, I have 2 surviving chicks out of pixie and asterixes clutch. Pixie(hen) is a sky blue recessive pied greywing, and Asterix(cock) is a dark green/olive recessive pied. One of the babies (18 days old) is going to be just like his/her dad, with black eyes. the other chick is 16 days old and has some yellow pin feathers and red eyes.

Could baby no.2 be a lutino? Is this possible from pied parents? Any other suggestions?

Yes a lutino is a sex-linked gene if it a lutino it would mean that the cock is split to lutino and this chick would be a hen.

could very well be lutino. Fingers crossed that it is! Look forward to seeing photo's. :bump:

Chick no.2 is definetly lutino! does this mean that the recessive pied chick will be male?

ummm... I'm really bad with genetics so I will prepare to be corrected but... no.

Jimmy you are correct with 2 recessive pieds you will have 100% recessive pied, lutino gene just popped out as a surprise :party0011:.

Since the father is splt for ino (lutino or albino) then you would expect that half of the female chicks would be ino and half of the males would be split for ino. If your cock bird is also split for blue you could get albinos in the future. Any ino chicks you get from this pair will be masking recessive pied so if one of them was mated to a recessive pied male that wasn't split for ino then all the chicks would be recessive pieds. Hope I'm not confusing you

you sure are Neville... but thats only because of my small brain. recessive pied overrides ino is that right???

typo recessive

JB Stop you are too funny :o

...the ino gene erases all marking so that is why you may not know if it is a recessive pied but in this clutch it is 100% sure so good breeding records on your part will keep everything straight :(.

recessive pied overrides ino is that right???
The bird is both mutations but you can't see the recessive pied because it is covered by the ino. You may notice that it doesn't develop iris rings

ohhh Neville never though of that excellent point

ahhh!! So it is possible to have an Albino Reciecive pied and the way you would tell is by the iris ring... well lack of an iris ring... you learn something new everyday don't ya.
