October 20, 200816 yr Could you have removed the hen and let the dad finish the job? Also fostering older chicks often doesn't work as the parents seem to know about it once the feathers are through. As far as hand rearing goes - that's not my area, but what you have sounds right - good luck Give the baby millet to nibble on in its cage. I would also try and not crop feed first. if it will take it from a syringe or a spoon, its better in the long run too. Edited October 20, 200816 yr by **Liv**
October 20, 200816 yr Hi Neat, I agree with Liv, Try dad first and then if that doesn't work try spoon or syringe because to my horror not long ago I tried to save a young one about the same age with a crop and I don't know how I did it but I must put it down the wrong way and he died in my hands and mind you I have done heaps like that. Took me a while to get the courage up to do it again. You can try putting baby oil on the baby, some times the parent don't like the taste. Edited October 20, 200816 yr by splat
October 20, 200816 yr You can try putting baby oil on the baby, some times the parent don't like the taste. Hi Splatt, I'm not sure about the baby oil, did anyone else see the clip about baby oil on 60 minutes where in the US they have child locks for the lids because if ingested they can be extremely harmful! And there has been known fatalities in children, so I can't image what could happen to our sweet little guys. I'm using stop pick spray for caged birds from aristopet, it seems to be helping.
October 20, 200816 yr Know I didn't see that and that is really scary, But the whole idea of the oil is the birds are not meant to eat it because of the taste, Some people use Vaseline which you would think that would be worse being petroleum
October 21, 200816 yr Author I have heard that olive oil is good. But i have none in the cupboard .... baby got feed by me and is doing okay now ... I will be monitoring it's weight now ... I will keep you all updated
October 21, 200816 yr I am afraid I am not one for smearing babies with anything. More trouble than its worth....everything gets stuck to them. :hap:
