Keeping Your Aviary Cool

Very cool :D

Is there anyway you can collect and recycle the run off water for other things ?

I had thought about that but it would mean installing gutters- however, the laserlite we used is not rigid enough to support that...

I bought an ionising evaporative water cooler from Safeway/Woolworths just before summer for my birdroom and I also have a fan in there it works well but wont dry out eggs either. I am a bit worried today because I just rescued 26 budgies and their chicks and they are outside. I have been spraying them with water from a spray bottle, today is the first really hot day for us at 40.9'C. I must work out some other ways A.S.A.P. as we live inland and it gets quite hot.

After discussions, we are suggesting that you should take your evaporative cooler outside and point it at the aviary. The birds will flock to the cool air, especially if they can sit on nearby placed perches.

Will do, thanks for the idea!

It's SOOOO hot today here too and supposed to be worse tomorrow. All my birds live outside althought the main budgie aviary is in the garage where it stays a little cooler. I just sprayed all the birds with the hose to cool them down, I am thinking about getting some small fountains which I can put into the aviaries just for a few hours each day when it's hot (or check and clean them every hour or so if necessary). I sprayed the corellas and my hen put her wings right out and fluffed her body up to get as much water on her as possible :D, my lorikeet Tingles is currently 'swimming' in her water bowl :)

Yeah its a hot day here today. Hope all the Victorian Forum Members birds are nice and cool. First real hot day of the summer.

Worse tomorrow, I cant stand it! One of my new budgies did that with his wings too! I hung a wet sheet in front of half my aviary where the new rescue birds are and the wind is blowing through it and giving them and the chickies a cool change.

I worry MB that by providing a fountain you are vulnerable to bacteria growing in it and the budgies being affected. :(

Even spraying them direct causes me to be concerned, although in the absence of any other solution it's all you can do. ;)

I have noticed that the pergola helps keep the aviary cooler by at least a couple of degrees and if you can, I'd suggest you erect one over you aviaries or set up a shade cloth about a foot higher than the roof so that air can circulate.

Of course the sprinklers work a treat but you can replicate that effect by spraying the roofs of your aviaries with water. :)

Unfortunately as we rent we are limited to non permanent solutions. My aviaries are all metal and have concrete floors with lino over the top which I keep very clean(like I'm talking vacuum and mop with vinegar weekly clean) so I don't think bacteria growing inthe aviary is too much of a worry in my situtaion. I wasn't planning on leaving the fountain there all the time more something I could just put in for an hour or so to let them have a nice bath and then take it straight out again. :)

In hot weather the bacteria grows in the water, in any 'open' water container. I wasn't having a dig at the cleanliness of your aviaries. ;)

I also rent, which is why the pergolas work for us - they can be easily erected and dismantled according to the season.

Do you mean those picnic pergola things? We went through two last summer before coming to the conclusion that it was too windy for them at our house. We are on the very top of a hill and it's very windy here, despite having them tied down to the ground both were torn to pieces and ended up on our roof!

I replace all my budgie water a few times a day in hot weather as I have had trouble getting them to drink out of bottles.

Just lookedback at your photos and that's the same type we tried over our aviaries last year before giving up. We are hoping to move during this coming winter into a homeof our own so we'll build something permanent then, just got to get through the next couple of months.

Yeah, I remember you mentioning that. However, there are cheapo ones that you can pick up from Bunnings for just under $40 OR the sturdier ones that retail for about $120. We have both and the cheapo one is flimsy as ever but the dearer one is pretty stable, but you do need to double tether each corner.

Does the fact that you're on a windy hill mean that you get the sea breezes?

We get the "Freo Doctor" every afternoon from about 3pm onwards which is a life saver.

Unfortunately our yard is north facing so any wind we get tends to be the hot wind ;) The ones we had set up was tucked in the corner between the house, fence and back of the garage and was tied down all over the place but as we get wind gusts her up to 120km/hr on a bad day it didn't stand a chance. I figure I'll just be vigilent about cooling the aviaries myself this summer as last year I spent about $150 on the ones we had and they were destroyed within weeks...

Now that's really bad luck ;)

Yeah, it's also really hard to grow plants as everything dries so quick but I've become pretty good at getting around the downfalls of the house, and it is good that we do have a nice big yard even if it is windy. On the up side, when I do wet down the aviaries, etc atleast they dry pretty quickly ;)

well this year i finally could aford not only a new shed to convert to a aviry but i have brought the same pipe stuff reene did only my plans much diffrent

water is soo soo precious here water from every rainy day i save even if its just a cup as it feeds one pot plant so i am getting a small tank from bunnings yea love that place or a old milk drum

a good quality filter i have no idea yet what type but looking around the pump from my fountain and if needed will just get a stronger one

basiclly the idea is to place the pipe around the frount going up and along back down and alone ground back into the drum /tank the pump will cerculaite the water the filter will keep it clean (their will be mesh filters also set up along the way ) gutters on roof to catch water when or if it rains

and a safe amount of vin to keep alge away the water will have three options for birds one a half spray mist

two a shallow bason with a drain hole filtrated of course coffee filters good for that bit catch dirt feathers

and a clear perspects wall just long enough and wide for the birds to flap on in the running water into the bason all this running of the same pump filter thinggy it is workabale cheep and efective just need to clean all filtters so main filter does not get blocked quickly this way they have running water at want no waste the still will have their water drinkers hard to explain but workable will post pics when up and runnig and cost what i used so one for all to veiw

at moment im just tampering with diffrent ideas that will be afordable for any novic like myself

mb foutains clog very fast will drive you batty and cost more than my whole set up will if i made it twice the foutains dont work very well i tryed that once my idea comes from that experiance

I just wanted to :D this one for the victorians this week.....

  • 2 weeks later...

We have had such a hot spell the past week or two in Vic. My birds were really heat stressed by early AM. Our aviary didn't have much shade and full arvo sun. The tin roof gives them shade and I have shadecloth over the open area but in full sun it is still way too hot. AFter the first day of hot weather we recloated it to the side of the house so now early AM it gets filtered light thru trees and by about 11am in full shade from house. Much better spot for Summer but Spring & Auturmn probably better in the other spot so they get those nice sunny days. We just moved it with a trolley.

To keep them cool I am misting them with the hose, changing water and I put a big beach umbrella over the top of the aviary and wet the underneath of it. Adds extra shade and the cool from it drips down.
