Meet Pegleg Pete

Meet Peg Leg Pete. He is one of my new budgies. He came along with some new budgies I bought from a breeder last Friday. The breeder asked if I would like to take him as she had nowhere for him to be and thought I might like him. Peg leg Pete is a beautiful Grey green Double Factor Dominant Pied.

Peg Leg Pete only has one leg. He lost half of his right leg in a leg ring accident.

Peg leg gets around pretty good. He uses beak and his good leg to climb the bars of the cage.

He perches very well. DSCF4364.jpg

and he walks across the floor of the cage using his stump just like another perfect leg. DSCF4354.jpg

Amazing how tough some budgies are :D

Awwwww Look at him go ....

He doesn't even notice it's not there

It's great to see how well Peg Leg Pete has adapted :D , I'm going to bring my physical handicap budgie "Hobble" in as a tame bird as he has now fledged(You may have read about him in other posts), but is once again being plucked and I think this is due to being different, in their eyes inferior, I will post a updated photo of him soon. I'm going to take him to see Colin Walker an avian vet to see whether the foot which is "buggered" for loss of a better word, would be better removed? Anyway great to see another bird with a foot problem getting along nicely without it, I thought budgies never did real well without a foot :D .

An update on Hobble would be good :what:

Pegleg doesnt seem to notice he is any different and the others do not pick on him so thats a blessing.

I'm going to pop him in the Kindy cage with 3 other UBC's for a couple of days, until I find an appropriate inside cage with his special need in mind-alot of the cages these days have a wire base before the plastic tray and I don't think that would be the best for "Hobble" so I'm off to find a nice sized simple retanglar cage with plastic tray bottom to it, then I will built a platform for him to perch on, leaving some normal perch aswell incase he masters the art of perching normally. I'm hoping the other 3 UBC's don't pick on him, Mother Nature can sometimes be cruel, when parents pick out the weakest and sometimes eradicate them. That's why he's being moved tomorrow, before things get serious.

Funny you mention Hobble and he was plucked ....

I went to the nest box today and noticed that the Pied baby had a few feathers missing from the nack of it's head .....

All the babies in there are Blue or violet even mum ... But this one is Yellow .....

I am sure it has been plucked a little I will be checking tomorrow ... As this has never happened to me

He is a good looking bird- even footless!!

I have had a one legged rec pied for a few years now, he still bathes, he lies along the perch to preen with his good foot and 'he' has a 'boyfriend' (dont ask- story of my life these new age budgies) you wouldnt guess it without staring at him

One of this years babies got caught up somehow by her ring (still cant work out where) and broke her leg has mended now but is a little crooked they are pretty resilient birds

Just think how well those seagulls get around with 1 or no feet!

It has been suggested I use him with Artificial insemination but seeing as he gets around okay maybe later with the right girl and an adapted cage he may be able to manage. But a budgie breeder has said she will show me how to do A.I. just in case.
