My Baby Budgie's Are Dying Help

Featured Replies

Posted

Hi,

About 3 weeks ago all my females laid eggs, they had 5,5,2.

4,5,0 hatched and I have had three out of nine die already.

What am I doing wrong???

HELP please.

Kirsty

You need to give more info about what you are feeding, what they look like when they die, whether there are any symptoms beforehand(looking pale, etc)

I agree more info needed...

What are you feeding them?

Are they colony bred or cabinet bred?

Are there any rodents around?

Have you got any sick adult birds?

Are you providing any supplements?

and anything else that you can think of that might help

I feed them a budgie seed from my local pet shop, and sometimes Whistler from Woolies

Greens from the garden

Cuttlefish

There is no sign of sickness, they just die, and they look pale when they are dead.

Colony bred, I have already had 1 clutch of 4 that none of them died.

Thanks

Kirsty

are there any feathers missing? Do they look like they have been in fights? Have you taken any to the avian vet after they die for an Autopsy? My first thought was other hens.. wanting to use that nest box...

Pale chicks are at the no feathers stage JB. Usually indicates an infection. Are your water sources all clean every day for the aviary ? Any chance you have mice going through your aviary ?

they are only young babies, and all the hens are breeding there is no sign of fighting!!!

The water may be an issue Ill go and clean it, no i dont think mice can get in.

If the water isnt right then the babies can get a gut infection from contaminated water and being delivered to them by the parents feeding them.

I am sorry to hear about this mishap. In reality, budgie water needs to be cleaned daily be it in a cage, avairy, breeding pairs etc....daily clean water is essential.

I have cleaned the water and given them new seed. Will the other 6 die?

One of the babies that died was in with 2 eggs that were due last thursday,(the baby was adopted) but they have not hatched, should I take them out? Will the female lay again?

She laid 3 eggs and none hatched, she does have a mate and they seemed to be successful but the eggs are infertile.

I have two females with 3 babies each should i put them in with one female?

then the other one can lay again. Or is that to many for 1 female? How many can they cope with?

Thanks Kirsty

Are all the Babies that have died from the one parent ....

I agree with everything WATER NEEDS TO BE CLEANED DAILY ... If you can not clean it each day Do it at night before you go to bed ...... This is how Bacteria forms especially on hot days ....

No there was 2 from Blossom, and one from Lemon that died.

Thanks all.

About fostering the babies...you havent said how old they are. If feathered and coloured up they often dont foster well or the new parents wont take to them. Give more info please ;)

Also another note ... When you handle the chicks and you should wash and disinfect your hands between nests ... ( i have a bottle of hand sanitiser for this ) .. As you can transfer stuff from 1 nest to another

Could it be Pasty Chicks? Photos would help.

A couple of months ago I had a 3 nests on the go, chicks being transferred between fosters, and all the chicks left with one hen in particular died at the 6-10 day period (or maybe even earlier, can't remember). They turned a really pale, greyish colour and died.

I researched a bit and came to the conclusion that it was liver failure and was directly linked to the quality of crop milk the mother was feeding them.

There are several remedies recommended but the easiest is to transfer to healthy hen to foster. If you can't do that, try giving the chicks a drop of olive oil to the beak once a day.

Hi,

One more budgie died and the others have turned a nice healthy pink.

I have had one more budgie hatch in the nest box where I put 1 foster baby that died.

What type of supplement should I give my budgie's? They only get seed, greens, & Cuttlefish.

Thanks,

Kirsty
