The Handrearing Begins!

Featured Replies

Well today is the first day of a very hectic few months for me! I have brought up to my brooder 3 baby cockatiels to handrear, and within another few days or so will have another 2 ready. Also very soon I will have 4 Princess Parrot chicks to rear as well and then last but definately not least my Major Mitchell chick which only hatched today but he wont be ready until another 3 weeks or so. So I will have to stock up on handrearing mix, syringes, etc etc etc!!! I will start a "photo album" here for you to see just how fast they grow! First picture will be of my 3 cockatiels but you'll have to wait till tomorrow for that!

I cant wait to see your photos Jenene :D Tell me about the BROODER too :hap:

The brooder is quite a simple item. I bought it off Ebay a few years ago. It is like one of those big plastic storage containers and has a light bulb attached to the inside of it with an electrical cord and plug. It has a smaller container inside it for the smaller chicks which can be removed as they become too big for it. It has a lid to keep the warmth inside. It has a digital thermomter on the outside so you can regulate the heat. It works very well and I have reared all different varieties of parrot chicks with it. Photos coming!

Tiring work but I am sure worth it in the end :), look forward to pics.

It sound like you are going to very busy, do you put all the different babies in the brooder together.

I have two brooders Deb, so I can put the princesses in one and the cockatiels in the other. But before I do I will try them all in the one - I dont anticipate any problems with them as they are both non-aggressive parrots.

Great photo's!!!

Wow! Look how young they're! You're going to be there for a while hehe :D (Don't I know it)

OMG! ....

You sure do have your work cut out for you - What a brooder ... So simple I have seen all different types.

This looks the easiest :D .....

Good Luck with everything ....

But i do have a question ... Why are you hand rearing them all ? So they are hand tamed ?

Yes Neat, if you get them out of the nest just when their eyes first open they dont have the chance to bond with their parents and so they think I am! (There's a method in my madness!)
WOW aren't they georgeous are 2 of them going to be lutinos?
Yes there are 2 lutinos, 1 white face, and a normal (I think!)

Here are my Princesses that I will be rearing also.....cockatiels100.jpg

That is very impressive! the whole thought of hand rearing scares me and i am dreading the day i have to to it. ;)

That brooder is awesome!!! how do you get heat though.... it it from the light as i thought those lights were cool ones :)

Handrearing is awesome Liv, once you get the hang of it it lots of fun!

I'm going to change that lightbulb as it doesnt give off enough heat and will use the normal ones.

Just beautiful babies and good luck with them all. I believe the government are making those light bulbs complusory soon so will you still be able to get the old ones, which give off better heat?

The older version give off the most heat - I certainly hope they will still be available, if not, I better stock up on them!

Cool ... I didn't know that about the eyes and MUM's ....

BL That is why woolies only now has 2 lines of the old fashion bulbs ....

I would stock up now too ......

If they do stop making the old style bulbs you could always use a low wattage heat globe that they use in reptile enclosures.

Hi everyone, so sorry I havent been on for a while! I have been flat out between working, handrearing all my babies, and looking after my kids (and my partner)!!

They have all doubled in size (the chicks that is) and are growing before my eyes!! I brought my Major Mitchell up to handrear yesterday and he is going very well so far! To top it all off a friend at work asked me if I would put her duck and chicken eggs in my incubator for her, so I am trying to keep them all at the right temp and humidity and turn them 3 times a day as well, so if you dont see me around for a while you'll know what I'm doing!!

I never realised Jenene how much hard work it is but after running around after my new ones just this afternoon I'm amazed you raise so many!

We don't mind if you aren't around much Jenene as long as you keep up a steady supply of photos :)

I was wondering where you were... I know you're busy, BUT what??? No photos???????????????? :) ... especailly your Major Mitchell! Glad things are going well with them mate xo

Sorry Maesie! I promise I will take pics tomorrow. The MM is so gorgeous, but has no feathers as yet and feels like a frog to touch :)

Will do Maesie, because I am working tomorrow (Cup Day up here too), I get a day off in lieu so I'm taking Wednesday off and am going to a nursery a couple of hours away (down past Deb's place) and going to buy some plants for my garden, so I'm looking forward to that!!
