Posted October 17, 200816 yr Hi a few weeks ago my normal green pair George Jr(Georgie) and Lumina(Lulu) laid their first clutch of six eggs. Lulu being the stuborn hen she is did'nt really want to mate with George but then after the first egg was laid she actually invited him to mate, but any more than once was pushing it(George!) yeah and me trying not too get exsited in case nothing came of the eggs.....well I was more worried than anything I thought she was eggbound everytime she had an eggbutt(Im a very...no stupidly paranoid person)and then I was scared George or Lulu were going to crush the eggs. But then now I have two healthy little jelly beans unamed in case something happens to them, but the good news is that there crops are always full and when ever they sqeek Mommy or Daddys always there I think George is the main chick feeder. The most custest thing happened today Lulu acsidently knocked baby 2 on his/her back and it sqeeked and George ran in there and rolled him over. Well here are some pictures George the Dada Lulu the Mama Baby 1 Pictures of baby 2 coming in about two days because I have a guy coming to clean the oldest feet on sunday (I'm to scared to do it) Edited October 19, 200816 yr by KAZ
October 17, 200816 yr Congratulations Jodie :party0011: Looking good! Don't be scared to pick up the chicks. You can handle them from day one to check everything is okay. They are very robust little things.

October 18, 200816 yr If you tell yourself you are scared you will be. There is nothing to fear. They are tough little things and you will feel good about the experience. As a breeder you MUST handle the chicks from day one to know if all is well with them.

Gently, without squeezing, or just roll them onto your hand with your other hand and replace the same way.
October 18, 200816 yr Kaz is right and the more you do it the easier it will be and you have will well rounded parents and chicks from the handling.
October 18, 200816 yr good luck, I absolutely understand your predicament, I was scared I was gonna hurt my adult birds, hate to think what I'll be like when it come to the chicks... take on board everyones advice and I am sure you'll do a great job.
October 19, 200816 yr Don't be scared mate...you wont hurt them. If you have someone else to take a photo... I'd like to see the next ones of the chicks in YOUR HANDS . When I pick them up I put one hand in the side of the next box and use the other hand to gently grab them and place on my other hand. I then gently check them over. Handling them at a young age will help in taming later.
October 19, 200816 yr They are looking good. No hands??? . You can do it mate... Just remember to wash your hands before and after with warm water (then your hands will be nice and warm for the chicks)
October 19, 200816 yr Author Here Maesie I'm holding the chick except I was scared for my skin to touch his/her skin. This is the oldest chick who's five days old today his eyes are slightly open (is that normal?) Is it to early to tell their genders or if I get a good enough picture could you tell? All of them in their Snuggle Huddle Edited October 19, 200816 yr by Neat fixed up post
October 19, 200816 yr Hey mate .... Wow I must be rough as guts with mine ... I just pick them up like i would a marble .... If you wash your hands before you touch the chicks this will be fine mate ... ( WARM YOUR HANDS UP FIRST THOUGHT - if you are like me and have ice cold hands) Eyes are good ... How are the parents coping ??? Are you giving extra soft foods

How are the parents coping ???Are you giving extra soft foodsthey get lots of soft food. And the parents are doing good George is so sweet he flips the babys over onto there backs and feeds them and when he's done he flips them back over and Lumina takes the baby and pulls it under neath her and George goes onto the next babies(which reminds me do budgie parents clean their babies? I see George lick/nibble the babies all over)It's just amazing how much they care and love there babies it's just wonderfull to watch them nerture their young. What other foods should I give at the moment I give Millet in the box, egg food, Kiwi treat stick for George and regular seed.I'm still iffy on the veggies my mom says no and you guys say yes.they look good Jodie, I knew you could pick them up.I only picked the oldest up the younger ones are too small
October 19, 200816 yr It is hard to pick up small babies, to try and get them gently between your fingers while they are so small, but as Kaz said, if you just use your other hand to gently roll them into your hand, it is an easier way of doing it. They are looking great and also, as said, wash your hands in warm water and make sure your hands are warm, cause babies dont like the cold! Well done Jodie

Well done Jodie :sadsorry: Hi Sunnie Thanks for the Information I'll try that I pick up the biggest by putting my thumb and my index finger under his/her wings and place him/her on my hand and roll him/her on its back to check its crop and feet. Honestly these chicks allways have a full crop. And how old do they have to be too tell there gender as I'm in-patiant and want to know (also there getting to the age where I'd like to name them)
October 19, 200816 yr A lot of members here can guess gender when the babies start getting feathers, but you have to realise until they are sexually mature, and their ceres change colour, it is only really a guess, although, it can be a pretty good guess. Generally after a baby has gone through its first moult at around 4 months (I think) this is when their cere colour changes - brown for girls and blue for boys. Some younger chicks have very obvious signs of their sex though, but not all :sadsorry: Patience grasshopper!!
October 20, 200816 yr Author Hi here's an update The pictures The most sweetest thing happened today I held the oldest chick called Littlefoot by my parents because he/she has a really long neck. Well anyway I was holding him/her and he/she fell asleep on my hand, then he/she yawned and opened his little eyes Those beautifull eyes, the great thing is that he/she is a week old tomorrow. There are four babies now.
