Posted October 17, 200816 yr :hap: Hi, I honestly don't feel these birds are anywhere near show standard, however other more experienced club members (who haven't seen the birds) feel that it would be good just for the experience of showing a bird and it is my clubs show-ED diploma show this Sunday, so I'm torn between taking birds which I feel are totally out of their depth but just take them anyway. I don't mind if they come last, I just don't like the thought of people thinking geez this breeder has no idea what a show bird should be, when in actual fact I know they're not the best. Anyway I thought I may post a couple of photo to get some opinions of what the forum member think. I have posted photos of the whole show cage so you can get an idea of their size (small) and then a couple of closer photos. Thanks I will appreciate any thoughts you may have and yes you can be honest, its called constructive criticism. I beleive this young bird would be classed under UBC Normal Sky Blue and he's a cock. and this is a UBC Normal Green Hen Also have I got the classing right? Thank you for the feed back. October 17, 200816 yr You should definitely enter your birds! It's really important to get show experience because you learn about preparing birds for show. You have to start somewhere and there's no time like the present! If someone has the temerity to criticize your birds just tell them to shut up! :hap: I bet they didn't start out with show stoppers, no one does. When I joined my club the President was doing a talk on the Blue Series and asked new members to bring along their blue birds. Well I turned up with my Pet Shop blue birds and was somewhat bemused that others were ******* themselves laughing at my birds ... They were blue, What was their problem?! However, my enthusiasm was rewarded when top breeders then sold me their birds that have gone on to win many prizes and formed the foundation of my flock. So, there you go: You've got to be in it to win it! Edited October 17, 200816 yr by renee
October 17, 200816 yr Author Thanks Renee, You've given me a little more confidence that it is fine to enter the birds just for the experience and to h-ll with what others think, as these are my very first self rung birds, I do have some other chicks just fledging now with a bit more buff and size to them but Mum decided to pluck-Not happy Jan!!! But hopefully as young birds they may grow into something decent and the nest box plucking may not be an issue after they moult.
October 17, 200816 yr I'm very jealous that you have some birds to show this time around! I have two chicks and three eggs in the nest to a pair that I hope will produce my first decent show birds but they are still pink and feather less, don't know what they'll think of those :hap: Edited October 17, 200816 yr by Neat
October 17, 200816 yr Good luck with your show. I am entering some of my first ever chicks in an unbroken cap show we have here soon. I guess initially, I was hoping I might impress someone, but now I am trying to convince myself not to be disappointed and as Renee said, just totally looking at it as a learning experience for what happens next time round. Once again good luck, I hope your experience is enjoyable :budgiedance:
October 17, 200816 yr Hey Carolyn I'd like to come and have a look, what time and where is the show being run?
October 17, 200816 yr Go for it !!!!!!! What have you got to lose. Nothing, But you have everything to gain ... Including feedback on your birds ..... This is a big step I am sure ... But one well worth taking .... Good luck and all the nest at that show mate ....
October 17, 200816 yr I say go for it :budgiedance: You just dont know what the competition will be like on the day or how the judge will see your birds. Some birds look terrible one second and fantastic the next, so a photo wont show them at their best. Also you have to be in it to win it and to try at least is half the battle. To front up and bench your birds is an expereince in itself and everyone should at least have a try at it. I remember taking 5 of our member *Libby* 's bird to a show for her recently and she did really well. She thought she would get nowhere BUT she took off 4 firsts and a fourth .........NOT BAD RESULT FOR FIRST TIME SHOWING This topic here http://forums.budgiebreeders.asn.au/index....showtopic=21522 So...............do it.......and have fun going and thoroughly enjoy yourself. Best of luck Edited October 17, 200816 yr by KAZ
October 17, 200816 yr Well I have never shown so take this opinion for what it is worth, but I think that if you are interested in showing (which yuo obviously are or you wouldn't be asking) then go for it. Like the others have said experience is everything and once you get your first show under your belt you will only improve... I'd keep the photo's and hang them on my office wall or something just to be able to look back and say this is how I started and this is where I am now. Tiger Woods, Roger Federer and others weren't champions the first time they did there respective hobbies... neither will you. but you will have an experience that will help you grow in the fancy. Good Luck, I'm sure you have the support of the whole forum. So even if people do say something bad you'll always have more saying Good on you!!!
October 17, 200816 yr Author Thanks everyone for all your positive feedback , Hey MB the Eastern District Diploma show is on this Sunday at Northland Secondary College, 62 Murray Road, East Preston Melway Ref: Map 19 B12 Benching of birds between 7.30-10.00 Then the judging will commence I would have loved for these birds to have been a bit larger and fluffy looking like Kaz's beauties but I suppose I am expecting too much for my very first clutch , since joining a club.Everything takes time , lots of effort and most of all PATIENCE :budgiedance: . Anyway I will let everyone know how things went Sunday evening.
October 17, 200816 yr I am hoping to enter birds into a show one day. I do not know much about showing birds so all I can say is GOOD LUCK I hope it all goes well.
October 17, 200816 yr might see if I can make it Budgielover... I start work at 12:30 so I dunno if I'll be around for the results but I'd like to see how it all works... I've never been to a show... Edited October 17, 200816 yr by Neat
October 17, 200816 yr I have seen the inner club ones and they are okay ... Can't wait to see a "real one"
October 17, 200816 yr Good luck, that was going to be my answer too why not go for it just the experience alone will be wonderful.
October 18, 200816 yr How was the experience? Sorry I didn't get to make it, got home at 2 am last night from Seaford Footy Club Best and Fairest (who knows why they waited a month after the season finished to do it but oh well) forgot to set up my alarm so needless to say I didn't wake up in time. Hope that you had a great time! Hope this is the start of a big bright future for you in the Fancy.
October 19, 200816 yr They are probably being judged as we spak JB Carolyn was looking very nervous but her birds looked great
October 19, 200816 yr awww you went?!? I knew I should've woken up, we could've had a forum reunion! I'm sure her birds looked great.
October 19, 200816 yr Ohhh I can't wait .... I am nervous for her too I am sure that no matter what the results she would have had a great day ..... Great Moral support MB
October 19, 200816 yr I had to come home as my kids were going feral but AV is there and so is Pippi I think they are planning tohead over my way after and talk budgies
October 19, 200816 yr Cool .... After she has settle them in get Budgie Lover to let us all know how she went ....
October 19, 200816 yr Author Hi Guys, Well I had a fantasic day. Both of my birds came 2nd ! Should I mention that there were only 3 in the light green UBC beginners section and only 2 in the sky series UBC beginners section :laughter: , but my light green hen still beat 1 competitor to get 2nd so I was wrapped , and I did get to see some awesome birds, after being so nervous about entering them I just can't wait till I have some young birds to enter in a show. I will probably retire these birds as I know in the young bird section there were some brillant birds and I have some which are just starting to fledge with a bit more size to them but they have been plucked by one of their parents, but keeping my fingers crossed once they've gone through a moult that there will be no evidence of this. I have to go and grab the camera to post a couple of photo's I took at the show. Will be posted soon!! Thanks so much for the support and I better go and grab something for dinner for my boys but will post the photos tonight.
October 19, 200816 yr Alright!!!!..... Congrats Mate .... Look forward to the photo's ... Glad you had a great day with great results
