Posted October 16, 200816 yr HI there, My budgie Aprille has 6 babies in her nest, oldest being 2 weeks youngest being just under a week i think. She has been taking excellent care of all of them. Just today i have noticed that the 2nd or 3rd oldest chick has a little bit of dried blood on its head. Would she have accidentally stepped on his/her head or would it be something else, All of the babies crops are full. thanks Edited October 16, 200816 yr by maesie Spelling and Shortcuts

October 16, 200816 yr Author okay thanks, Aprille has had 3 other clutches... first 2 babies took great care of them, second 4 bubs took good care of them, third 4 bubs and took care of them as well this is her biggest so far. Thanks Also is your name Elise because my 5 year old sister is also called Elise.
October 16, 200816 yr Hey Mate.... How bad is the blood ... If you can get a photo that would be awesome - Elise, parents can attack their young - as well as feather pluck them ....... Edited October 16, 200816 yr by Neat

You need to be very careful of this and be on the ball. I suggest putting some millet in the nest box. You can also replace the nest box door with a clear plastic one... both suggestion CAN stop this behaviour... if this is what is happening. Do you have any other budgies breeding who you can foster the chicks to if needed???
October 16, 200816 yr Author Neat- I cant get a picture at the moment , its night time but ill try get one tomorrow, Its only a tiny bit of blood, it hasnt grown any feathers yet so could it still be feather pluckingNo i dont have any foster parents at the moment, the baby hasnt yet grown feathers.I already have millet in the nesting box too.

Good stuff about the millet. Do they have any 'fluff' on their heads yet??? Could she be plucking that? I'm thinking, that even if they don't have feathers yet... this behaviour could be an indication of something to come??? BUT... It's a good sign she hasn't done it to any of her other clutches... maybe just keep a close eye on them for now?!?!?! Good luck and please keep us updated
October 16, 200816 yr Author Thanks they dont have any fluff on their heads at this stage 3 of them have slight colours through their wings but thats it, the other 3 are just pink
October 16, 200816 yr 2 weeks old they should have some down on them ...... I look forward to the pics mate .. Sorry I forgot you are in NZ not Aust
October 16, 200816 yr If there is colour on the wings like you said and nothing on the head...and there is spot of blood on the head....then one or other parent is PLUCKING
October 16, 200816 yr That is what I thought too Kaz ..... Could be a sibling doing it too .... http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=jl0OQJV60mU Edited October 16, 200816 yr by Neat added link for prrof
October 16, 200816 yr A picture isnt necessary for us to show Brittany...feathers showing colour on wings with no down on the head means plucking. Especially with the spot of blood on its head. Brittany can you post some clear pictures please ? You need to watch and see which parent is doing this. Edited October 16, 200816 yr by KAZ
