Megabacteria ?

We have some bad news

We think it might of started a few months back when one of our best Males with no warnings just dropped dead (we had him for 2 years or more)

We have 3 pairs of breeders in the boxs now and yesterday morring we were checking them and 1 hen has her face covered in regurgitated seed.

with a lot of searching on the net, Its is disease  she has been in the main cage with all the birds too, and the male that was in the box with her is our last good breeder and our 7 year old daughter's Pet. So thing are looking to good.

We havn't got any new birds lately the last one was about 12 months ago. I also heard that even with the treatment it will come back I will be giving the Apple Cider Vinegar ago with all the birds today (fingers crossed)

the really bad part of this is our favorite bird that lives in the house with us and is very very tame and talks (never shuts up) Has only been in contact with some of the other birds in the main cage in the last couple of weeks.

I will take a photo of the sick hen and post it so others will know what to look for.

You really need to know for sure and that involves seeing an avian vet. Other things can show as regurgitated seed...such as canker.

Megabacteria is a secondary disease that rears its ugly head AFTER a primary illness has caused their resistance to become low. Megabacteria rods multiply in the budgies system until it has no fight left in it to live.

This is a picture of megabacteria rods in a budgie taken by microscope slide

It is good that you have your warning lights on mate ... But like Angel my hen she is the most messy feeder - Seed all on her face and the babies as well ....

You can get the bird tested to be safe . But my views on Mega is that all budgie have it ..... and when they are at their lowest is when it shows it's true colours .....

She's looking pretty sick now but is still trying to eat.

will try the vet out but there not really to good with the birds around here more a livestock vet.

OMG is that your sick hen ....

HOLLY HE LL ..... GET TO A VET NOW!!!

Mega Or Canker does this ...

Any vet can make a slide and look at it under a microscope. If he doesn't know what he's looking for tell him if there are little round swimming type things then it's canker if they are long and thin like the photo above it's mega. At least that way you will know what treatment to give.

Budgie smuggler...the need is great. You really need to do this.

Yes, take your dead bird to the vet for analysis.

Also add 2 drops cider vinegar/litre to the water of all your birds. If it is megabacteria that will help lower the PH in the water and help combat it as megabacteria is a yeast and sensitive to PH levels - too alcaline and the yeast thrives.

Did I miss something .... Isn't it still alive :D

YES!!!! Renee, the first bird died a few months ago... the one in the photos is not dead.

Good luck at the vets mate ... keep us up dated ....GOOD LUCK!!

Keep us updated, I hope you were able to get this bird into an (avian) vet or simply a vet at this point, keep her warm, feed, and to a vet. Never self diagnosis.

okay I'm back from the Vet with Good and Bad New

The good News first its not Megabacteria, He said its Wire Poisoning. I didn't think there was a thing. I think this is right too because thats the only cage we have that the wires not power coated.

So the cage is Gone!!

I have also taken a fresh poo of every bird to get tested

okay the bad She died last night at the vets

I'm so sorry for you loss :angel1:

Glad you found out what the cause was.

Very sorry to hear this :happy-dancing: I am sorry for your loss.

In the end this is a lesson learnt and by you posting what happened you will have educated another member (s) about rust and cages.

Again, am sorry. Keep us posted about your other birds.

I am really sorry you lost your bird too :happy-dancing:

Another lesson learnt by all is also about assuming a symptom means one thing that when diagnosed means entirely something else.

OH My .. I am soooooo sorry for the loss.

The poor little things ... :happy-dancing:
