Hello and welcome,

He sounds not well. it could be so many different things that can cause the same symptoms. It could be stress, lack of food, change of diet, droughts etc. There is also a long list of illnesses and diseases that can have the same symptoms too ^_^

Your best bet it to make an appointment with an avian vet and get him looked at.

In the mean time, get a lamp (25-40 watt globe) and shine it on his cage. the warmth will make him feel better.

Give some pure raspberry cordial (casscade is a good brand) in his water and keep him warm and quiet.

Photos would be a great help too.

Good luck

Thanks Liv I was thinking the vet.

How much cordial do you add to 250ml of water and should it only be raspberry?

Hi and welcome too :P I'm not sure about the ratio (I'm sure LIV knows), but I'm thinking it should only be raspberry. Also, make sure you go to an AVIAN VET. Normal vets usually don't know all that much about birds and you'd probably be wasting your money going to them. Good luck and please keep us updated. I'll also keep him with you and not move him back home until he is all better. Stress from moving probably hasn't helped what ever it is he is suffering from.

I think it's 50 ml to 1 litre? And yes, it does have to be raspberry, but a good quality cordial, like Cascade as Liv suggested. I hope he gets better ^_^

It doesn't really matter - i give about to 20ml to 500ml of water - i make it quite strong as it has an antibacterial property and also perks them up a bit ^_^

It needs to be the real cordial with over 20% pure raspberry in it - the kids stuff will do nothing.

You have received excellent advice...warmth, vet appointment and the purest raspberry cordial you can get into him for right now.

I would like to thank you all for your excellent advice. Sorry had to leave for a while. I hope you all have a fantastic week and thanks again. Cheers D

Keep us updated, the most important thing as said is get him to an AVIAN vet AND also make sure he is eating once he stops you may need to handfeed him because if they stop eating they can loss the battle very quickly. Keep on eye on the poops that will inform you if they are eating or drinking, white = urine (drinking) black = food (eating). Good Luck.

Hi all,

this is now Billie's :party0011: "mother" continuing on from my brother-in-law's wonderful care. I thought you would be interested in outcome. I took Billie to avian vet today who said it was either- blocked gullet, heavy metal poisoning, or soft obstruction. or tumor(unlikely). After two x-rays (and a lot of money later :party0011: ) he says it looks like a soft obstruction. Most likely a piece of rope from a hanging toy in his cage that is stuck in his passage.

I will keep you updated on any other outcomes. thank you for all your kind thoughts and suggestions of care.

As an matter of interest I had already taken Billie to a regular vet who said he was stressed and had mites and gave him a course of vitamins for two weeks. The avian vet I saw today said none of the above were correct (although the vitamins would not have done any harm). Seeing as this (Avian) vet really seemed to know his birds I also asked him on his opinion about raspberry cordial and apple cider vinegar as a treatment. He agreed these are good starting point for minor stomach upsets.

Claps hands together...good for you. Regular vets don't know anything about birds. Please keep us updated and on the course of action they are going to take. It is amazing what these little ones can ingest.

Great to hear that he is Diagnosed - CORRECTLY :o

No ever one can see the difference with a AVIAN vet and REGULAR vet ..

Did you doubt us on the Raspberry Juice and ACV ( Apple Cider Vinegar) :what:

Hi,

This is a further update on Billie! :D

After 2 days of treatment (lubricant and antibiotics and high energy food) the vet was not very happy with Billie's progress. Another x-ray showed the obstruction was still there just at the entry to the small intestine. The vet thinks it has attached itself to the wall.

Anyhow last night we thought was his last- as he was siting on the bottom of the cage as if in a trance. But this morning he was still with us with a very long dropping hanging from him. Not sure if this was the obstruction or problem but his droppings have now returned to a more normal colour and consistency. :)

Not out of the woods yet, but Billie does seem to be improving. He is now still on antibiotics and high energy food for next 7 days.

We are still trying to track down "real" raspberry cordial :bliss:

What a scare ... glad to hear that he is perking back up again - I am sooo happy for you ...

The one that most people / members have found is the Cascade brand it is in Woolies for $5 something ...

Did you have a look at the long bit of poo to see if it was ????

You can make raspberry cordial too minus the alchohol when you do a search with real raspberries if you wanted to go through making it. I hope he continues to do well for you. Did you call the vet about the long piece that came out?
