Posted October 13, 200816 yr Hey all.... I know that there are a few Vets, and Wild life careers here so I am after a silly yet RATHER IMPORTANT question.... Can a Red Belly eat a Mini Fox Crossed Chihuahua ???? I know that snakes size up their prey.... But I need to know if this snake can eat my dog???? There is no where to move JD to - And this snake keeps coming back to get him ........ The neighbour came to shoot it this afternoon, But it ran away ( to our side EKKKK) I have put a couple of cans near the area for safe keeping ... YES I AM WELL AWARE THAT IT IS NOT LEGAL TO KILL HARM BLAH BLAH A SNAKE - BUT THESE ARE MY KIDS I AM PROTECTING! So please do not give me the spill ... Also snake catchers and etc, don't come out here because the snakes have to much room to move Edited October 13, 200816 yr by Neat added more
October 13, 200816 yr wow... ummm I'm no vet/ wildlife officer but I'd be saying yes it could eat a chihuahua X Doesn't the venom help to breakdown the animal thus allowing the snake to swallow it hole??? Just something I saw on discovery or national geographic... that and a snake with a guys head and neck in his mouth... if your the guy with the head in the snakes mouth are you allowed to shoot it then??? Some laws are crazy... I understand that some snakes are endangered... but preservation of a human life has to come into it somewhere... maybe you could by a pet rat and leave the lid off... and then catch the red bellied black snake and keep it as a pet??? October 13, 200816 yr A very small dog I would assume upon researching it the snake it's main diet is fish, birds, frogs, and lizards. Frogs are a main part of his diet, do you have a pond by you or moist area where frogs are? I would be more worried about it's bite as it is a venom is poisonous but is rarely fatal is still dangerous. Do a google you will find more out too , that is what I did.
October 13, 200816 yr That is scary having a snake around, i hope you can find a way to get rid of it so your kids and dog are safe.
October 13, 200816 yr No Neat a red belly could not eat a chihuahua cross, unless it was some sort f mutant giant red belly It is poisonous though so if it bit the dog things wouldn't go well, if you see any signs of the dog looking listless then a trip to the vet urgently is in order.
October 13, 200816 yr Good luck with the snake. Use some :ratty: :ratty: :ratty: to lure it out of hiding

Thanks SCG for making us feel so happy... I really shouldn't laugh. I'm not laughing at your situation Neat I am sure you are very worried...
October 14, 200816 yr Author Thanks all for your replies .... Yes i am surrounded by dams, and catchments as well as an easement ...... There are frogs here Yes ... Blue tongues Yes, Skinks Yes Mice & rats aren't seen lately either the dogs are doing a great Job or that snake has has it's tucker .... There have been 6 red bellies the last 3 weeks .... This was a huge one about 2m long or just under ...... Talia Knows the snake rules, however Dylan the adventurous one like all things that move. So He never leaves my sight .... I am glad that - that particular snake can't eat JD ..... The best things about Red Bellies... There aren't any browns around ..... I have been doing a huge clean up of the cages and aviaries .... and this will be down morning and night - It is freaky stuff - But eyes down is the rules at my house ..... Thanks again everyone P.S Elly I did Google before I posted but i couldn't find my answer
October 14, 200816 yr yep this is the time of year they literally come out of the woodwork in great numbers . my parents are having issues at the moment with them to around their stables . one even got delivered with the horse feed last year which was a shock as i was the one packing it away and suddenly mr black snake came out right under my feet . if your dog is anything like my terriers ( they have small dog syndrome !) and will think a snake is a fair target so you need to keep a really good eye on it . we always used to "relocate" them ourselves but i dont reccommend it . children and pets welfare always comes first for me
October 14, 200816 yr Do you have mesh down to the ground with your aviaries or is there tin going up a couple of feet ?
October 14, 200816 yr Author The 1 aviary that is in use doesn't - But it is located in the back where the dogs are kept ... The other "porch" aviary is on wheeled metal legs so that one is fine and the 2 quarantine cages are on top of an old BBQ made from metal .. again should be fine .... This is the reason why I am putting the mouse and snake mesh on the base and side walls of the that are in used at the moment.. It is pouring down here today ..... So I am expecting it or other to be out later Edited October 14, 200816 yr by Neat
October 14, 200816 yr red belly snakes can climb though not really well and a big one probably wouldnt have too much trouble scaling your old bbq or your patio avairy for a feed , and you can also find eastern browns in the same areas as red belly and black snakes . dont mean to alarm you NEAT .
October 14, 200816 yr Good luck with it all Neat. I must say I do like the fact that living in the 'burbs I don't get snakes as much... I guess it is still a possibility but I don't really have a major worry.
October 14, 200816 yr You can think that if you like Jimmy, we are in the middle of Melbourne and had two tiger snakes last summer
October 14, 200816 yr I am sure that we get some but I imagine that its abit less than the people in the country... thats what I was trying to say.
October 14, 200816 yr Author Yeah it's crazy stuff - I'll need to re think that placements of the Breeding room and the Purple Flights... Which is proven a nightmare to say the less.... At the Old, old, House there were 2 goanna's they weren't nasty at all ... HUGE but not nasty
October 14, 200816 yr Oh man... I feel for you mate! When I was living up in the country with my Grandparents, after an evening out and a stinking hot day, I walked up from the tractor shed where I park my car, and saw what looked like a big stick!!! I stepped over it and as I walked away I heard a noise... turned around and it MOVED!!!!!!! I slowly made my way inside without making an quick movements... got my Grandpa, and he was off like a shot. It turned out to be a massive Brown Snake!!!!! Lets just say in future I always had a torch with me... and thank god on that night it was a full moon!!!!!!!!!! Good luck with getting rid of them... I don't envy you in the slightest. I own lizards, but snakes make my skin crawl!!! :ratty:
October 14, 200816 yr Tips for discouraging snakes: Keep the ground clear, clip shrubs around the base so they don't touch the ground and keep grass short, remove rubbish, etc Remove water sources, try and keep water for pets inside the house if possible, snakes are attracted to water as it is a good location for catching prey. Block holes in fences Red bellies won't climb as much as other species so if you can block the edges of the yard off at ground level up to about 65cm this will substantially discourage them
October 15, 200816 yr Author O M G !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! They jump!!!!!!!!! It stands tall , I went out the back to see what the dogs were barking at .. again .... And i stood on top of the dog kennel .... It is behind my shed - It stood up and looked I would say stands taller then 60cm MB it was more like a meter ..... It got something and has a feast on that ... okay I am really crapping my pants now .... Give me lizards, spiders and all the creepy crawlies in the world - but snakes ... They just freak me out .... It is time to do a massive clean up the last one was only a few months ago - There really isn't alot here just sticks and etc but the grass behind there is pretty feral as the ride -on mowers are broken down .... I am going to speak to a few catchers in the area and see if they can catch it and release it some where far far far far far far extremely far far away
October 15, 200816 yr hate to say it Neat, but you remove one and another will move into the territory. This is one of the hazards of living in our beautiful country. We like these areas where it is natural looking, with bushland. I am sure that people have seen my thread about the blue tongue lizard. 3 blue toungues that I know of in 3 years, and I have saved 2. One i was too late too, one dog ripped it apart. It could have easily been a snake. Nothing much you can do. Remove one, another will move into the territory.
October 15, 200816 yr Definately a clean up required, they will tend to stick in sheltered spots, follow along fencelines, etc so mowing that grass low may help the situation a bit.
October 15, 200816 yr Pefect environment for a snake. Mice to eat, most likely. Grass to hide in. Chook farm behind you where they most likely breed in abundance due to mice. I found a nest of dugite babies under my dogs kennel once too
