Posted October 13, 200816 yr Just wondering what you guys use to catch a budgie?? I'm trying to catch one of mine and get its leg reg info cos I have managed to lose the peice of paper it was writen on...
October 13, 200816 yr I use a net or my hands... Just standard catching rituals depending on what they're house in. In a cage hands are easier.
October 13, 200816 yr Author really hands??? I find every time I put my hands in the cage they are flying around into things and I'm scared they are going to hurt themselves... I guess a net might be an option...
October 13, 200816 yr You can do just as much damage with either really. I try to corner them and hold their wings in so no damage can be caused... In cages nets are a little bit fiddly.
October 13, 200816 yr I use a net  I have seen Missylu and her husband catch the birds with their hands ..... It is awesome, I am just not quick enough
October 13, 200816 yr I have big nets for the aviary birds and I have goldfish nets for the cages...in two sizes.
October 13, 200816 yr Author hmmm gold fish nets.... night have to give that a go I think... I'm not fast enough with my hands... I could try and sneak up on them of a night while they sleep but I hate people waking me up in the middle of the night so I will respect there sleeping time and not do that...
October 13, 200816 yr I used to use a net but i found that once the birds were in there they would get tangled up and it would take forever to set them free so when i dont use my hands i have a very light peice of material and i wait until they are on the floor and then i will throw it over them that way i can see where they are and they dont get squeezed when you try and catch them. I have found this to be the least stessfull way to catch my birds.
October 13, 200816 yr I use a big net. It's long and thin so the birds fly straight into it. Its made from a fine mesh fabric that is quite smooth so the birds don't get caught in it
October 13, 200816 yr I use a net but I had the net part taken off and we put a pillow case as the net so it didn't do any damage to the bird. When in the cage just with my hand, show birds are easy but little Aussie hens go for blood. Â Steve
October 14, 200816 yr That is a great idea with the pillow case ... The little claws won't get caught up ......
October 14, 200816 yr I forgot to mention, I catch by hand in the smaller cages, anything up to a metre in size cage I can catch by hand.

I could try and sneak up on them of a night while they sleep but I hate people waking me up in the middle of the night so I will respect there sleeping time and not do that... Â Â Catching them at night would be a VERY BAD IDEA. I'm glad you will not do this!!! Â I use either my hands or a net. It depends on the bird and how quick and confident I am feeling :bump: NET = Less stress (for me most of the time anyway)
October 15, 200816 yr Author further to this... I sat outside yesterday afternoon and was able to get pretty close to Len, but I was to scared that I would hurt him... he's probably thinking whats up with this moron. I just don't want to grab him to hard... everytime I'd get to close up len would try flying away and then I'd jump and spill half the seed and water... I look so stupid... I'm going to try a net tomorrow...
October 15, 200816 yr Author I know I'm not ment to double post but I just wanted to say... I CAUGHT LEN!!!! YAY!!! is there a ???? It took me a while but I did it. And looked at his ring and... its got something stuck to it and I couldn't scratch it off soo... what can I clean it with? Wow I am so happy that I was able to do it... I am stoked... I was so scared that I would squeeze to hard but I did it... Oh sorry guys... I just can't believe that I did it.. I am SOooo Happy!! Â upon reading what I have just posted I have come to the conclusion that many will believe, small things amuse small minds... but oh well thats me!!! Edited October 15, 200816 yr by KAZ added smiley
October 15, 200816 yr :happy-dancing: :bliss: Â YAY ... Â My mind is small and rather amused now :hap:
October 15, 200816 yr Author okay so now that you've laughed at me... any ideas on cleaning the ring??? :laughter: Edited October 15, 200816 yr by JimmyBanks
October 16, 200816 yr Jimmy, congratulations. I'm doing a happy dance with you! High 5 from me!!!! Â You will need some help. We used a knife scratching the stuff off to read the ring number. You can just phone the breeder you bought him from to get the number as well. One holds the big boy and the other hold the ring and knife/nail file tip to scratch it off. No problems. Comes off easily. Â Don't use any fluids. It will just give off fumes and you will hurt him. Â Good luck.
October 16, 200816 yr Author okay... I wondered about fumes and stuff. I will try scraping it off with a toenail cleaner... just worried I'll hurt the poor guy. I'll let you all know how I go, in the meantime any other ideas if that doesn't work?? Edited October 16, 200816 yr by **Liv** typo ow to how
October 16, 200816 yr I know the feeling that you might hurt the little guy. Just keep a strong hold on the toenail cleaner and the ring. The person holding your boy must foucus on holding him... not on what you are doing. Good luck. Our vet helped us scraping the stuff off, while my husband was holding our precious. My palms were just so sweaty... I couldn't. If you are in the process of doing it, and you feel you should not continue, then don't. Rather get the vet or their assistant to help you then. Good luck.
October 16, 200816 yr You will get used to holding your birds JB. they are pretty tough and you will get used to the amount of pressure to use. I am amazed at how much i can do now, budgie in one hand and doing stuff with the other. - its all about holding the bird correctly ----> How to hold a budgie
October 17, 200816 yr I use goldfish nets for my birds except for if they are in a small cage.. then I just use my hands
