Posted March 20, 200520 yr So my new"ish" baby budgie 9 weeks has been in quarantine for almost a month now and I felt I was getting nowhere with the hand taming, or very slowly anyway - he's quite handshy due to rough handling in his infancy - not me!! he's okay when you eventually get (tip gently)him out of the cage and will sit on my finger for a minute or two then flap off when you tried to feed him or get him to step up. I was about to give up and introduce him to my other very tame bird in the next few days, hoping he would pick up a few tips from him. So as a last resort I moved him to another (bigger) room for his training session yesterday, not much difference, he just sat quietly on the swing that hangs from the clothes horse (budgies love these, they are perfect climbing frames) as I cleaned his cage, but today! I got him out and he loved it. He's had a bath in a suacer pretty much on his own, tried to ride on his toy car, been munching millet stood on my hand and even landed on my shoulder albeit as he didn't know where else..!. I'm not sure if this is progress from ground work or putting him in a new room or a combination. He is even ALMOST climbing onto my finger on command by himself with a bit of coaxing but he is still a little unsure - this will come in time, I am sure. I know from past expreience that this is usually the turning point, once they actually start to enjoy being out of the cage with you around. I'm so glad I've persevered with him although I have felt like giving up several times!!
March 21, 200520 yr Whats a clothes horse? could you post a picture? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> It's a rail for drying clothes indoors, kind of zig zag shaped with lots of bars - like a big climbing frame for a small bird!. I can't figure out how to get any pics on a post sorry!
March 24, 200520 yr A clothes horse works like a little washing line. It's very useful for those rainy winter days!!!
