Breeding Indoors

Featured Replies

I have an aviary outdoors with 6 budgies in who will hopefully breed this summer but I would like to breed one or two pairs indoors. I have a large cage that I can attach 1 or 2 nestboxes to. Is it best to have two pairs or will one pair oblige? I have read that budgies need to hear and see their own kind to breed. Is this true?

Thanks

Jenny

most people breed in cages so that they can pair certain birds together they also become very protective of their space when breeding (this is the reason that they some times attack their young when they leave the nest and drop on the cage floor) so it is best to keep a single pair

Thanks for the tips - all I need now is to get a pair of semi tame breeding budgies. I was thinking of keeping one of the babies that I am hand rearing but then I will have to wait a year. I don't want ones that are too nervous because the cage is in my dining room and they will be so scatty with us around . Any ideas?

Have 1 pair to a cage but 2 cages next to each other so they can hear others around. This encourages them to nest.

A double breeding cage is best for each cage with a nestbox with inspection hatch.

I feed Number 3 budgie mixed with budgie tonic and EMP egg food. I also supply fresh greens, soak seed and apple.

Thanks PyscoFalcon for your advice. I'm going to try that although my cage is like an ordinary budgie cage rather than a breeding cage made of wood.Do you think thats okay?

Thanks

Jenny

There fine for pet birds but chicks can easily squeze out of the bars and/or become trapped in them especially if they fall or are kicked from the nest.

Hi Clinton

Go onto www.Arlane Aviculture.co.uk and you will see budgie breeding cages. You can order them mail order if you like.

Hi Jenny!

it is not at all true that they need to hear their own kind to breed. i have 2 budgies that live indoors and i have a beautiful healthy 4 week old chick!

Do all the research you can, but i find the best research is from experience!

Good Luck!!!

Sam
