Posted October 9, 200816 yr hi im going to look at some violet spangles and some dilute spangles on the weekend and was wondering if anyone had some pics or information they could post of what i should expect them to look like before i buy any . ive seen other spangles before just not violets or dilutes . as i will be looking to breed them later are there any faults or issues this type have that i need to check for ? thanks in advance .
October 9, 200816 yr I have a violet spangle, but the only picture I currently have of him is a baby picture. I am sure other members will have pics to share. I will try to take an up to date picture of him tomorrow to post, but at least in this picture you can see the colour
October 9, 200816 yr Author thanks sunnie thats a great start and what a gorgeous baby he was . the birds im looking to buy are still young , have fledged and may or may not have moulted yet so those pics you put up are quite helpful too . im told there are some whose ceres are already changed colour . im concerned that because the ones i may buy are aviary bred and raised they may not take to my planned cabinet breeding attempts later on , or is this not likely to be an issue ? October 9, 200816 yr I started out with colony breeding and have also bred some of my aviary bred/kept birds in a cabinet. My latest girl was a bit antsy for a few days adjusting to the smaller environment, but I try to stay away from the cage as much as possible to let them settle. Dad now looks forward to the little dishes of veggies etc I take to my birds every day and she is currently sitting on three eggs. I also have a hen I really want to breed with who was bred in a cabinet and she wont settle at all My pet types, aviary bred or not, settle very quickly cause they are such avid little breeders. Generally, as soon as they notice they are all alone together, boy meets girl, boy and girl see nesting hole and the rest is history
October 9, 200816 yr Author thats good to know that they can adapt like that . now i cant wait to see the birds . if they are half as nice as your one pictured im sure i will be bringing some home
October 9, 200816 yr I have this hen, she is a pet type and unforunately the flash has washed out her colour but you get the idea   You should be looking for nice dark spangles like she has and throat spot, preferably bullseye type ones. Edited October 9, 200816 yr by melbournebudgies
October 10, 200816 yr Author thanks for your picture MB she looks very good despite the flash :bliss: and shows the spangles up very nicely too  . im really looking forward to getting somme of my own real soon
October 10, 200816 yr Are you sure about the "dilute" spangles ? Sounds weird to me. Maybe they are cinnamon spangles.
October 10, 200816 yr Author not sure about the dilutes but im going to have a look on sunday . the owner said he had about a dozen violet spangles and dilute spangle youngsters flying about his avirary which are for sale . he didnt say anything about cinnamons . i only know a little about spangles and less about cinnamons , though i am going through the colour and mutations guide at the moment which is very helpful and informative . so much information to take in though :bliss: . if they are cinnamon would the eyes will be different and the spangles will be much lighter ?
October 10, 200816 yr Hey Brez are they show birds? CAnyou take some pics while you are there? If they are good I might keep it in mind for next time I'm up that way.
October 10, 200816 yr It doesnt matter what you look for as soon as you get there you will fall in love with them all and want to bring them all home! Violet spangles are so pretty i have had a few they are such a pretty pale violet almost a lilac. Where abouts is this breeder? i might go and check them out oo. Also with them being in the flight aviary they will be "wilder" than cabinet bred babies but they adjust very quickly i think it depends on the temperament of the bird. You can come across some stubborn little buggers!Goodluck with it i cant wait to see pictures!
October 10, 200816 yr Author i will certainly take some pics and unless there are any issues with the birds , health , setup etc im sure to be buying a few , but not all of them as difficult as that will be for me ! besides i want to keep some money and room aside for the bird sale . its quite a long way for me to drive to get them ( 90 minutes ) so i dont want to come home disappointed . oh and i forgot to mention they are pet types
October 11, 200816 yr Author missylu , sorry i forgot to add where they are . they are in st clair near penrith . not sure how far that is from blacktown ? he hasnt sold any of them yet and i wont buy them all so there will still be plenty left after ive been i will post some pics tomorrow anyway if i think they are worth the drive
October 11, 200816 yr Are you sure about the "dilute" spangles ? Sounds weird to me. Maybe they are cinnamon spangles. Â I know Kaz is right and this is why. The dilute, clearwing or greywing genes will wash out the marking on the wings you want strong markings on a spangle to really enjoy the beauty and I assume that is what they want in the show ring. You probably like the dilute because of the softness of the color but it does no good for the spangle gene to shine through. Â Dilutes when looking will be 80% washed out all over the body and wings Clearwings will have a bright body but the wings will be clear with almost no markings Greywings will have a 50% color loss and have greywings and then there is the Full Body Clearwing that has a bright body with greywings. Â For Spangles as said look for normal colored birds with strong spangle markings.
October 11, 200816 yr Thats about 15 minutes drive from me......... I will wait and see the photos and if they are as good as i think they will be i will grab the phone number off you. Goodluck and dont take all the good ones!!! Just kidding
October 12, 200816 yr Author well i got home a little while ago , with NO BIRDS ! i dont know where to begin as to why . but the main reason is ther were some sick looking birds in the flight avairy with them with some weird facial fungi and that was probably enought to put me off . i didnt want to risk any stress/travel related hassles making them worse either .didnt rate very highly on the breeders evaluation check list either so no birds for me (atleast i had a nice drive !) . the colours were okay but the spangles quite light and didnt look to be well looked after , thats the impression unsightly birds left me with anyway . so the search will go on ! the breeder had more eclectus than you could poke a stick at though but they arent really my thing .
October 12, 200816 yr Sounds like the birds has advanced scaley face and the breeder was able to tell you were shocked by it too. Best not to buy from people like that.
October 12, 200816 yr Author with birds like eclectus and alexandrine in his avairies i dont think the budgies were high on his priority list and it showed . shame really cos i thought scaly face was easily treated . i had other issues with the cleanliness of the place too and i could smell MICE ! but with so many avairies and birds thats probably to be expected
October 12, 200816 yr I did go and have a look at some budgies out that way a while ago and it was the same disgusting scaley face it to was out of control their beaks were starting to curl! Also had the mice problem but their were dead mice on the floor i took one look and started walking backwards as fast as i could to get out of there! I also told the budgie owner to clean it up or rspca would be called so sad. Anyway what are you looking for? I have a few baby opalines in cobalt and violet?
