Posted October 9, 200816 yr Hi guys, I am asking this in here mainly because I know that some members here have non budgie pets and I feel it is important to understand that the issue of quarantine is still an important one. I have some new birds arriving on Sunday. They aren't budgies but as the issue of where to put them still affects my budgies I hope you all don't mind me asking here. I know the minimum distance for quarantine is 5metres, but unfortunately the only aviary I have to put them in is only about 2-3 metres from my budgie aviary but facing the opposite direction(slightly different air space maybe??). So what I am wondering is if there is anything I can do to enable me to put them in this aviary and reduce the risks. For example would covering the front with fine mesh(like organza fabric or similiar) so that feather dust, etc can't get through be suitable? My only other option is to put them in a cage which is really too small and I don't really want to have to do that to them. (AV if you are reading I'm referring to the smaller one in the garage which currently has my breeding cages in it).
October 9, 200816 yr When my husbands parrot aviary had psittacosis and my budgie aviary was only a couple of metres away and we couldnt move them we got sheet plastic and attached it to the walls of the aviary. Your idea of mesh still allows minute particles of dust through and psittacosis travels through droppings dust as does some other diseases. My budgies never contracted psittacosis but I did in caring for his parrots. We have had more introduced disease in the early days through his parrots than we ever had with budgies. Hope this helps.
October 9, 200816 yr Author okay so maybe I would be better off sectioning the aviaries off from each other by putting plastic between them. The larger aviary is in my garage, the smaller one(where the new birds will go) is situated inside the garage but the only open side is outside the large rear door of the garage. If I hang plastic between the side of the front of the smaller aviary and the edge of the garage door the budgie aviary will be almost completely sealed off. Sound okay??
October 9, 200816 yr Sounds like a workable plan under those circumstances. Others things important are...change of clothes and shoes. The rule is the quarantined birds are dealt with last thing after all others and your clothes go into the wash and shoes disinfected. Washable thongs/shoes would work well for the aviary. October 9, 200816 yr Author I do a variation on that with my quarantine birds. I feed them first thing in the morning before anything else while I'm still in my pjs (barefeet). Walk in through the laundry and deposit pjs into the wash with napisan and then jump straight into the shower. That way I can spend all day enjoying my other birds and know the quarantine ones are happy and healthy and have had their morning food. Works for me Atleast I know they are coming from a reliable source as they are actually from AVs cousin who lives over the back from her So with some reasonable quarantine care I shouldn't have any trouble at all
October 9, 200816 yr Author okay, I've done a plan change and I'm going to do an aviary shuffle and put them in patio aviary for thir quarantine Hopefully they won't make too much noise and then in a month I'll move them into the garage if they are being too noisy (don't want to upset the neighbours) Edited October 9, 200816 yr by melbournebudgies
