i got a new budgie and i decided to tame it. So i brought it inside this was my first time training, and so i started with just putting my hand in the cage every 5 minutes and getting him used to it. and in an hour he was jumping up on my finger, my next step was getting him out of his cage so. I took him into the toilet (i closed the toilet lid) and he was fine. I got my friend in to clip his/hers wings. Now a week down the track he/she isn't as tame, when i get him out and he's sitting on my finger he'll see his cage and fly towards it, then I'll go and get him and all i have to do is put my finger in front of him and he'll jump up with no problem but when i move him away he'll do it again and again until i get sick of it and put him back in his cage. i don't want him locked up in his cage all the time so please give me some tips. :fly:

You need to cover the cage when you are training him so he can't see it. At the moment he sees it as a safe place so until he sees you as a safe place it needs to be out of sight.

MB is right, I had the same issue with Pretty. So what I did was covered his cage and if he flew on the cover that was okay but he wasn't climbing all over, at one point I did remove it from the total scene because I wasn't getting anywhere with him.

Sounds like you are doing everything right just keep working with your budgie, taming takes time and patience but is worth it.

Whenever i let mine out in the bathroom or room now,

i take the cage out entirely if only i could do that to the lounge fan they keep on flying up to it then i have to get a chair and et them lol

I agree with the others... remove the cage or go to another room. Keep at it and you will get there. It takes a lot of time and patience!!!

Ummm I agree with the other regarding covering the cage ... But I am stuck in the wing clipping ....

 

Was both wings clipped? I don't understand how ( if clipped correctly) that s/he could fly and land on the cage. Unless you are standing right next to it ????

Yes, confused good point, I know they can get lift in a month but not when they are first clipped

I clipped Cosmo's wings when we first got him, but not very short, so he can still fly short distances, and around the middle sort of height of the room (as in, not up on the ceiling). So maybe pixi did it in a similar way.

 

 

Anyway..... I agree - I saw it as a good thing in a way when Cosmo started flying back to his cage, because it means he likes his cage and has settled in there. When we first got him he did everything he could to try to escape the cage, so even though it was annoying i was glad when he started to prefer his cage. But it does make it harder. I wouldn't say your bird is completely untame, he's just getting there slowly as they do. Keep it up and try to spend short periods of time away from the cage. But not too long in one go.... try and finish up on a good note, and don't overdo it each time. Sounds like you're on the right track

Pixi. I would say that I am a pretty decent bird trainer (just look at my videos)- BUT I had the exact same thing with my new bird. And nothing at all worked. I did exactly the same thing, and stuck it out. BUT I believe some birds are just better off with other birds, not with human company. By all means keep trying, but sometimes the bird just doesn't come around either.

My little boy is now alot happier with a few other budgies than he would have been as a companion bird.

It took me 9 months for Pretty to come around, each bird is an individual some tame with a snap of the finger and others it takes time but if you really want a companion bringing another bird in the mix can be a mistake because when you do they will tend to ignore your efforts even more. So before you get another bird if you ever do you have to think about the pros and cons.

It was in regards to your comment as my own opinion, I see a lot of people run off and get another budgie and then regret it because they have 2 untamed budgies, it was not in regards that what you did was right or wrong (yours was an opinion just as mine was) but what could happen if she decided to take your advice which is not either right or wrong but an opinion like myself . Everyone has to do what they feel is right for their budgies but again I wanted to post what the results are if she did decided to get another budgie . That is all
