I had the same thing happen with my hen just a few weeks ago. I was advised to put millet spray in there with her and also have alot of "soft foods" available (but not in the nest box) for easy and fast feeding. Soft foods like greens, grated carrots and eggs, etc... it's easier for her to eat and much easier for the cock to fill up on and regurgitate back to her, but also of course keep plenty of seed available too. Edited October 8, 200816 yr by Neat Changed regergitate to regurgitate

October 7, 200816 yr Jodie, I am not sure what you mean, your hen should have a good diet and variety while she is breeding (and not) that includes veggies, the chicks are too young to even pick at them if that is your concern.

The parents regergitate what they eat to their chicks including eggs, veggies, etc... In fact is is very important that your breeding budgies have these kinds of food to stay in top shape for nurturing their young and keeping their strength and weight up themselves. I'm not sure who told you they can't have that but if you are giving your keets ( budgies ) foods from the approved food list for budgies anything they are eating is good for the chicks too. October 7, 200816 yr I agree With Elly, Give veggies all the time to your birds. Each morning for breakfast my breeders get, ground hard boiled egg (with shell) , grated carrot, peas, corn, silver beat, broccoli and pollenta. - and they completely scoff the lot in one sitting :fly:
October 7, 200816 yr I think maybe you're getting confused with the advice that you shouldn't give you babies greens in the nest box to pick at as it doesn't provide enough nutrients for them and can give them the runs, there is nothing wrong with providing the parents a good varied diet though, they will choose the most appropriate foods to eat out of what is offered while they are feeding chicks. I have a cock who won't eat soaked crumbles any other time but when feeding chicks he absolutely devours them. Edited October 7, 200816 yr by melbournebudgies
October 8, 200816 yr Im frightened to give her veggies because the eggs are close to hatching and chicks cant have veggies Who told you chicks cant have vegies ???? Because thats wrong. Breeding birds need to eat lots and eat well. Give the hen everything you can, and YES put millet spray in the nestbox.
October 8, 200816 yr Agree with all that has been said .. The more the veges and soft food the easier it is for the parents to feed bubs ... Are you sure you didn't mistake Vitamins for Veges ?
October 8, 200816 yr Author I'm feeding egg food and regular seed and the bell things and millet I have peas and carrot in the fridge I could try for them

October 8, 200816 yr Now is the time Jodie to be trying your budgie on everything....fruit vegies and soft foods. She will be keener to eat more and to try new foods just because she is feeding chicks. I wouldnt use the seed bell if thats what it is...more honey, sugar or glues used in them than is good for them. If its a calcium bell then thats fine
October 8, 200816 yr Something mine love at this stage is chicken crumbles. The type you can buy from the supermarket or stockfeed places for baby chickens to eat. Soak them in water until they are soft
October 8, 200816 yr I'm feeding egg food and regular seed and the bell things and millet I have peas and carrot in the fridge I could try for them Sounds good... Is that egg and biscuit mix from the pet shop? I recommend: Hard boil an egg- I crack and bash 1 egg, shell and all into a microwave safe container and zap it for 1.5-2 mins. Then mash it all up with a blender/mix master or alike. Then add to this peas and carrot... and anything else you have they might like. Mix it all up fine and serve She will love it!!! October 8, 200816 yr I'm feeding egg food and regular seed and the bell things and millet I have peas and carrot in the fridge I could try for them That's a good start. Just shred them up and give it a try. If you know your birds like the egg food and eat it well you can mix the veggies right into the egg mix if you want. I have some birds that won't touch the stuff but if it's mixed together they do pretty well with it. Edited October 8, 200816 yr by KAZ
