Posted October 6, 200816 yr hello to all . i have a pair of budgies sitting on 7 eggs at the moment . im very excited as i can hear chirping coming from #1 egg first thing this morning , which is due to hatch today . how long now til it hatches ? and if it doesnt hatch how long til i should help the little jelly bean out ? when i checked the egg yesterday evening there was no chirping . this is my first real attempt at breeding but i dont want to get too carried away either .
October 6, 200816 yr Hi there, I think these two links may help http://forums.budgiebreeders.asn.au/index....hing+late+chick http://forums.budgiebreeders.asn.au/index....thers+crop+milk Hope they help you...
October 6, 200816 yr The little bub should be out of the egg by about lunch time - sometimes a little later. here is a link on hatching late babies ---> here good luck :rip: lol- snap Libby Edited October 6, 200816 yr by **Liv**
October 6, 200816 yr Author thanks there is great information there and sure to be very helpful though i hope i wont need it . this pair laid eggs in the bottom of the cage in feb this year (not planned ). 8 eggs all up and only one hatched which i thought was great as i was of the opinion none would make it . this time they have a nesting box and have been getting spoilt so im hoping for more than one bub ! i will update on how things went , and will also candle the rest of the eggs when i check later too . thanks
October 7, 200816 yr It's been ages since I bred, but I do remember chirping from the egg first thing in the morning was a sign that the egg was going to hatch that day. The mum should help it out if it needs it. Next thing you'll see eventually should be a tiny little chip in one spot. You might not want to interfere with it too often though in case it disrupts the mum's routine of helping them out, but in terms of checking on it and knowing when it's gone on for too long and needs your help, I'm not sure about that sorry. Good luck! It's a very exciting time.
October 7, 200816 yr Author its all good , bub #1 is out , 6 to go and #2 due tomorrow , fingers crossed
October 7, 200816 yr Sometimes letting nature take it's course is the best thing, congrats on the bub... and the pictures are where?
October 7, 200816 yr its all good , bub #1 is out , 6 to go and #2 due tomorrow , fingers crossed Should be two days between hatchings.
October 7, 200816 yr Author the first two eggs were laid 1 day apart then the rest every second day . the first egg was laid mid-morning 19/09 and the 2nd egg late afternoon 20/09 . should i still be expecting #2 to hatch tomorrow ? egg #2 is a different shape , more round and has a chip in it , so im not expecting it to hatch . havent candled the eggs yet either
October 7, 200816 yr Author thanks liv , bub was hatched by lunchtime as you predicted . im happy as and will add some pics later . soooo cute
October 7, 200816 yr I had one do exactly the same today - cheeping eggs in the morning means chicks for lunch lol
October 7, 200816 yr If egg two is viable then yes you would expect it tomorrow if laid only one day later.
October 7, 200816 yr Author here are betty ,dom pied and george (curious) normal green and bub jack from unplanned "cage" breeding in march if what ive read is right offspring would be 50% normals + 50% dom pied ?
October 7, 200816 yr George is not a normal green. He seems to be a golden face type 2 cobalt so that makes him a blue series budgie just like Betty Is his tail navy blue ? Is there blue under his wings ? Edited October 7, 200816 yr by KAZ
October 7, 200816 yr Author yf2 you say interesting . george (top right picture) only has some dark blue in his tail feathers whereas jack (bottom picture)has some around his vent ,chest and very dark in the tail feathers though i was expecting these to disappear with this molt . i just assumed george was a normal green and jack got the blue from betty and was split for dom pied . no idea even how i ended up with yf2 . ive always wanted a blue yf2

They cannot be split for dominant pied.
October 7, 200816 yr thanks for clearing that up for me Just wondering if egg two hatched?? You said it was more round then the first one and it had a chip in it. First, I know both my hens first eggs were different shaped. The first egg in each of their clutches were more pointy on one end but the rest of the eggs in both clutches were nice and smooth round. It seems to be something with "pinching out that first one". Also you mentioned the chip in the egg. Did this egg have a chip from early on or just in the last day or so? Is it a chip like damage or a chip like the bub is breaking through? Just curious to see if number two made it or not? Le us know. Fingers are crossed.
October 8, 200816 yr Author hi chrissy . egg 2 hasnt hatched . looks to have 2 darkish shades inside when i candled it this morning and no movement either so doesnt look good to me . has had a small chip about 1mm round in it since very early on so im thinking maybe the hen did it but not really sure

I agree with MB. If it had a hole or crack since the beginning it probably dried out and never really made it far into development. I had this happen with one egg in my very first clutch this year. I was advised that I could "patch it" but even sometimes trying to patch it can make it harder for the chick to hatch out when it comes time. Well keep us updated on the next arrival... sorry your second bub didn't come to be. Edited October 13, 200816 yr by Neat
October 10, 200816 yr Author i just removed egg #2 from the nest as it hadnt hatched as due 2 days ago . i opened it and found there was an infertile yolk inside . i guess that means that had it been fertile the chip in the outer shell would have made no difference :bliss: . tomorrow i will invest in a torch better suited to candling . jelly bean #1 is going great , i cant believe how fast its growing  . the third egg should've hatched by now but hasnt . fingers still crossed . dad has spent the last 2 nights in the nest box with hen and jelly bean which is something i wasnt expecting to happen , and they seem to be very settled too . October 10, 200816 yr Glad to hear all is going well. I myself have been amazed at just how attentive the males can be. My cock that is with his hen and one chick, has been wonderful. I don't think the mum has done the primary feeding for this chick in at least a week now. The cock does it all. If the bub cries, he jumps and asks how high!!! Even if you don't get any more bubs out of it, just this one you have will amaze you. My one and only chick will be one month old this weekend and I can't believe the process.... from this little alien looking thing to a beautiful feathered baby!! Keep us updated.
