Posted October 5, 200816 yr Hi I went to a pet shop today and I thought it was really good I was wondering if it was good for budgie buying. Here are some facts *had clean water *nice staff *made me feel nice *smiling *have a little room with a play gym for the budgies And there is just one thing I'm not sure about and that is that they say they get there birds from customers. I'm looking for good advice so I can work out if to buy a budgie there Thanks!
October 5, 200816 yr My preference would be to always buy from a breeder if I could... but that is just me. Where abouts in Australia are you? Maybe someone on here could help you out. Always remember to quarantine your new budgie from your current one.
October 5, 200816 yr A pet shop will take budgies from anyone so there is no guarantee that the bird is safe - its not always about the shop - its about the bird. If the budgie in the pet shop came from an aviary where the breeder didn't give mush care then the bird is likely to have a number of issues. There is know way of knowing the background of birds in a pet shop. This is why we always recommend cutting out the middleman and going straight to a breeder - you will see first hand if the budgies are of good background and the breeder can fill you in on anything you need to know
October 5, 200816 yr Petshops can buy from three different breeders in a day and put them all in together. No quarantine and by the time you have bought your bird it has incubated and developed a disease and can be sick. Petshop staff on the whole will tell you what you want to hear. they will tell you its a boy when its a girl and vice versa. They will tell you an older budgie is a baby and so on. They will clip wings to make an older budgie seem like a hand tamed baby. Too many bad stories and experiences with petshops and bird buying Edited October 5, 200816 yr by KAZ
October 5, 200816 yr Sunnie and I are right here anytime - we will have babies available in about 8 weeks and you are welcome to visit
October 5, 200816 yr We have 2 great articles in the FAQ section about Evaluation of a Pet Shop and a Breeder you may want to read. Personally if I lived by any of the breeders on this site that I knew were excellent there would be no question I would wait and get a baby from them. So I would take Liv up on her offer
October 5, 200816 yr Petshops work because people operate on impulse and creditcards. You see a cute budgie and have money or credit card and walk out with a budgie in a box or a package deal. Most people dont stop to think or weigh up the pros and cons when a cute budgie captures their heart. I would take up the offer for a budgie from Sunnie and Liv in that position well before I would walk into a petshop looking to buy a budgie. Been there, done that
