Posted October 4, 200816 yr I have just been to a bird place to get food etc for my budgies and we noticed a baby for sale sitting on the bottom of the cage floor not able to perch and having trouble eating. I felt so sorry for him so I bought him home with me. My question is what should I be feeding him? I have no idea how old he is. Should I put some millet in there for him as well as seed or give him soft food(egg and carrot etc)
October 4, 200816 yr Give regular budgie seed, millet, grated veggies and some egg and biscuit mix on the bottom of the babies cage. Give it a heat lamp of 25-40 watts as well as it could be quite stressed, possibly ill. Can you post a picture?
October 4, 200816 yr A photo would be great Molly. Also make sure you are keeping this little one away from your other birds... if s/he is sick you don't want the others to get sick.
October 4, 200816 yr Author He seems to be doing fine since I have got him home, even eating the millet yay. He is in a separate cage away from the others as I know the risks and no way am i going to risk it. I will try and post some pics tomorrow, maybe you can all tell me his exact breed or close to it anyway. Thanks for the help
October 4, 200816 yr Agree with the others..... Poor little thing I hate hearing that people / shops are selling very young babies it makes me so ... They need to have some sense knocked into them ... Good to hear that s/he is eating ... Keep us updated ...
October 4, 200816 yr The not able to perch could be a sign of sickness and not too young, I would post a picture here so we can see the baby and follow the advice above. I hope this little one will be okay!
October 5, 200816 yr Author Here are some pics of Lucky. He is now perching but he seems very strange. He spends all his time climbing up and down not even trying to jump to the perch etc like the others. He also likes hanging upside down all the time. Maybe there is something just not right about him. He is now eating small amounts on his own and I have been hand feeding watering as well. I think he is going to be my special boy? At least I think it's a boy. Can you tell me if he is a boy or girl and what breed? Im guessing a yellow face something?
October 5, 200816 yr he looks very cute , however is it just me or is that bell in his cage rusted? if so i would remove it as budgies can get sick from rust
October 5, 200816 yr Very cute, your just like me. I found my baby Molly on the floor of her cage and felt sorry for her too. Her whole life story so far is documented on this site in Bringing home a new budgie under "life of molly" Edited October 5, 200816 yr by KAZ
October 5, 200816 yr he looks very cute , however is it just me or is that bell in his cage rusted? if so i would remove it as budgies can get sick from rust GREAT observation Andrew.. Spot on with the rust! - Which can lead to heavy metal poisoning
October 5, 200816 yr Congrats on lucky Looks like a yf DF spangle, but can't tell sex, would need better pics of the cere
October 5, 200816 yr I agree a better show of the cere meaning closer and clearer, you can see if your camera has a macro setting (indicated with a flower) and that is what you would want to set it on to get a good close up under natural lighting. As for being very young he/she does not look too young to have been sold so keep an eye on him/her check the poos, the bum, if it continues to lay on the floor of the cage I would consider consulting with an avian vet because the budgie could be sick. As with climbing around, hanging upside all good signs of activity and not using the perches yet is not uncommon in the beginning he is probably just trying to get used to his new surrounds.
October 8, 200816 yr Author just an update on lucky, It turns out I believe is a she after reading posts about cere colour etc. she has the white rings around. She is eating and plays heaps. Loves the millet, very friendly unless she thinks you are going to grab her then she bites HARD. She still loves the bottom of the cage but Im finding she is curling up there and sleeping. I am so glad I found her.
