Blue and the Vet Visit

Thanks for that advice will disenfect everything first and then wipe eveything down with the ACV.

I managed to get Blue into an avian vet at 12:15 today. Hes sleeping again on his perch. His bum is quite red I was watching last night he seems really irritated by the poo being stuck to his features he tries to kick out at it.

If there is any other advise I'm all ears to help my little baby pull through and to stop Molly from getting it. I read thats megabacterior was transfered from feeding each other and also via a budgies droppings. So will work out a way to clean Blue's cage again after the vet trip if we don't have to put him down. Hopefully not

If you can clear away and clean up his bottom. It is an important thing as they can reinfect themselves by cleaning and preening the area...transferance to beak and back through their system. Best when they have a pooey bottom to clean it up. The quickest and easiest way is to just pull away some feathers around the vent and not subject him to water or bath.

I have soaked eveything in disinfesctant and am now wipeing everything over with the ACV with the feed dishes should I rinse them after wipeing them down or will it be okay

Make sure you thoroughly rinse all disinfectant, then apply the acv and leave in the sun to dry :)

Thats what I did, her cage is all done. Now for Blue, how do I clean is bum, do I just get him out and pull the poo of or should I cut it. Kaz said it was best to clean him up as he could re-infect himselfI would like to clean Blue's cage and wipe it down with ACV aswell should I put him in a shoe box as well or should I wait to clean his cage out after weve been to the vet? Also he isn't drinking a lot of water he is eating the corn I gave him which would provide some moisture but I really want him to drink some water so how do I go about getting him to drink or should I leave him and let him drink when he wants to?

You can cut, clean it or pluck it, whichever you feel is best.

HAve you tried him on sulphadim?

whats that? can you get it from pet stores or the vet? What does it do?

So do I get him out of his cage and do it and then put him back in again? Should I try and do it as fast as possible to not stress him out?what about his feet? They have poo all over them should I try and clean them up as well? and if so what with?

I am no expert on any of this, but if you are worried about him not getting enough water, maybe feed him a little lettuce.

sulphadim is a board spectrum sulfonamide antibiotic. I am not exactly sure where you can get some - your vet will know :)

Cut off as much of the poop as you can, then place him in a warm bowel of water (only legs and vent) and wash off the rest of the muck. make sure he stays warm and dries quickly.

You can get it from many pet stores and your vet should house some also.

It's excellent for hardening up poos and restoring ill birds back to health.

I'd personally try to avoid getting him wet where possible if he's that ill and just pluck the affected vent feathers and keep him warm... Feet can be cleaned with warm water but wetting down his vent and feathers will chill him internally also.

Well we went to the vet. The vet told us that because Blue is nearly 4 (a senior) they don't like giving antibiotics to older birds as it can effect there health in a bad way. It cost us $57.00 and she cleaned and cut away Blues yucky feathers. His vent is quite red and swollen but he should be more comfortable she told us that I have to wash his vent twice a day with warm water on a cotton bud and aply vasalen cream on it once a day, she also gave me a sachet called Protexin that I have to add to 1L of water and give to him daily and she also gave us Baytril oral solution which I have to give him 0.1ml twice daily. So hopefully it will perk him up a bit. Hes not allowed green vegetables until he is better and he is not allowed in with Molly until he is better but they are allowed in the same room together. She ruled out any bacterial infection due to Molly not having any symptoms even though he had been in with her while he was sick. He has been a bit shaken having his vent features cut of and is now resting under the heat lamp in my room.

I always thought that budgies life span was 7 - 14 years not 4 - 5 years.

Just come home from the vet and turned Blue's heat lamp back on. But I went in there a few minutes ago and he's sitting on the bottom of his cage sleeping so I rang the vet back and asked what I should do and if it was normal after being stressed out. She said it was and to turn of the heat lamp and remove food and water and put him in a dark area/ cover him so that he settles down a bit. I have done that but how long should I keep him covered as I need to clean his cage? and also I don't have another cage to put him in so could I put him in a shoe box like i did with Molly this morning? will this stress him out again? I don't know what i should do I need some advice

So the vet said that it was STRESS?

No she not sure what it is but he got stressed out at the vets and was sitting on the floor of his cage after being at the vets.

If he doesn't think it is bacterial why is he giving Baytril? It is a broad spectrum antibiotic. Also personally I wouldn't call 4 'senior' for a pet budgie. Many pet budgies live as long as 10 or more years, show types not as long but I thik that is more because their lives are more stressful with breeding, etc.

Is this the same vet you saw the other day?

No this is my birds proper vet. I didn't think 4 was senior either

Is this the same vet sa last time or a differfent one?

Different one

Also he has gone back up to his perch, should I put him in the shoe box now and clean his cage?

4 is not old for a budgie.

I really hope the vet has helped and blue will get better now :)

Can you just unclip the top and take the top off and leave him on his perch? If he is this sick he isn't going to reinfect himself until he is actually better anyway. Unless his cage is REALY dirty and desperately in need of a clean I would leave him until atleast tomorrow until he is feeling a little better rather than stressing him out again today

If his cage is not too bad, don't worry about cleaning it. If there are any mucky areas from his runny poop you can put some shredded paper or something over the mucky bits for now - you need to stress him as little as possible
