Posted October 3, 200816 yr Well my corella has been in need of a mate for a while now but unfortunately Little Corellas are a little hard to come by especially tame ones. Most of the ones around are wild caught and often carrying beak and feather so I wouldn't touch one with a ten foot pole. However a nice old gentleman I know is selling one he has which is a few years old and I swear it is the tamest bird I have ever seen in my life!! Those of you with birds that can't be sexed visually are probably aware of the method of checking the pelvic bones to determine sex. Well I asked him if he knew what it was and he said hang on a sec and just put his hand under the bird and felt (HIS) pelvic bone right there on the perch! The little guy didn't even look at him sideways!!! Most birds I know would have to be held down in order to do that but he is just SOOO trusting. Needless to say I am thrilled with him. I can't move him to my place for a few weeks until I have a suitable aviary set up for him to stay in until he is ready to meet his new mate, but we are going to move him into a cage on his own and start his quarantine in the mean time.
October 3, 200816 yr That is cool , I have heard the pelvic bone methods is not very reliable though.
October 3, 200816 yr Author Not hugely reliable but it's a reasonable indicator in a pinch especially if they are an older bird that has most likely bred before. HIs pelvic bones are EXTREMELY close (I had a feel too and he didn't care when I did it either!), so it would be pretty unlikely it would be a hen even if he hadn't bred. I had planned to get them both DNA sexed to be sure but it gives me something to go on for the moment.
October 3, 200816 yr when i got Bing the breeder felt his pelvic bone to check that he was a male, and he was right, i want pictures of your new arrival when you get him/her Edited October 3, 200816 yr by Andrew
October 3, 200816 yr Author The pelvic bone doesn't tell a whole lot in a baby bird as they need to develop properly. His future mate, Suzie, is the big white bird in my sig. He is a slightly smaller corella so hopefully he won't get a complex fro being the smaller man
October 3, 200816 yr MB I have had great results with the Pelvic method and had some not correct one .... If in doubt there is DNA and or Surgical sexing (Surgical isn't expensive $18 in my area ... )
October 3, 200816 yr Author From what I felt today I am quite confident the new one is a boy, I'll get Suzie out tomorrow and feel hers to confirm but I'm hoping it will all be well and they will definately be a pair. Hopefully they like each other!
October 3, 200816 yr Author Depending on how reliable I think Suzie's (or Steve's :what: ) pelvis is I'll decide then whether I think a confirmation is necesary
October 7, 200816 yr If you are finding you ever need another in the future, Parrot Rescue Centre on the Gold Coast have corella's, cockatoo's and galah's all looking for good homes. A small donation is necessary and they won't let you adopt if they don't think you are suitable - they question you etc.
October 7, 200816 yr Author Well, he's home! Suzie saw him from the other side of the room as I carried him in and well, let's just say when they do meet it will be with the safety of bars between...she definately wanted to eat him!!! So it will be a few more weeks of quarantine and then a gradual intro starting with cages next to each other until the urge to kill subsides
October 7, 200816 yr Author Hasn't got one yet, any suggestions? His wifey will be Suzie... My liitle boy wanted to call him kookee but I said we could think of somethinf better than that for him
October 7, 200816 yr Author I would except my best friend has a dog called Suzie Quatro and she said I'm not allowed to give her Quatro as a last name I think it would be a little cheeky to call her mate that instead My mum wants me to call him Sargeant Pepper, cos he always has his little crest up andshe reckons he looks like he's got one of those old army helmets with the sticking up feathers on them. (oh, and also she says because it;s clear his mate wants nothing to do with him so he's part of the 'lonely hearts club band' Edited October 7, 200816 yr by melbournebudgies

Glad he got home safely.
