October 30, 200816 yr Author First chick born to Greygreen Spangle (cock) and Violet Normal (hen). She's a maiden hen and hadn't fed the chick by midday so I put the chick into a nest of three 1-2 day old chicks and transferred a day old chick into her nest. I'm hoping the chick will be fed by the temporary foster hen and the Violet will learn to feed with the transferred chick. Fingers Crossed! :parrot:
October 30, 200816 yr What kitty litter do you use? I use breeders choice. Its a recycled newspaper type.
October 30, 200816 yr Author What kitty litter do you use? I use breeders choice. Its a recycled newspaper type. Fussy Cat litter, 10 or 20kg bags from City Farmers or the local Pet Shop. It's like little white pebbles and absorbs all the poo and clumps so the little chicks feet stay clean.
October 30, 200816 yr Its the natural clay based kitty litter. Here is another pair just put down to breed. They have been in quarantine and cleared yesterday for breeding. Renee's YF Blue hen YF and my skyblue cock. Edited October 30, 200816 yr by KAZ
October 30, 200816 yr Author First chick born to Greygreen Spangle (cock) and Violet Normal (hen). She's a maiden hen and hadn't fed the chick by midday :fear so I put the chick into a nest of three 1-2 day old chicks and transferred a day old chick into her nest. I'm hoping the chick will be fed by the temporary foster hen and the Violet will learn to feed with the transferred chick. Fingers Crossed! :parrot: Another typical day in budgie land.... The Temporary Foster Mum squashed the chicklet to death and the bloody Violet didn't feed the day old chick I had left with her to learn with. I'm considering fostering all remaining 3 chicks now as they hatch. Hey ho.

I'm considering fostering all remaining 3 chicks now as they hatch. Hey ho. So sorry you have had a bad day :fear Are you able to supplement feed the little babies while the parent learns? I had to do it with one of my maiden hens - it took her 24 hours to feed on her own.

October 31, 200816 yr excellent! that is good news, are they both split for blue? or will that be a surprise if it happens?
October 31, 200816 yr I would be extremely surprised if the hen was split blue. The recessive pairing which have one chick have two eggs left out of three others. One I had to throw away yesterday as it had a hole in it.
October 31, 200816 yr Author 2nd chick of Violet hen and Spangle cock just hatched. He's chirping loudly but of course hadn't been fed..... Transferred chick to my BEST feeders and popped a 4 day old chick in with the Violet. I'm quietly confident this time. FINGERS CROSSED! :parrot:
